Benjamin Dale is a New Zealand tourism, cruise, transport and business-development leader whose career has been defined by international experience, commercial growth, and the ability to build industries, businesses and visitor experiences during periods of significant change.

Raised in Christchurch, Dale has built an unconventional career spanning cruise ships, international trade, mining and jewellery, travel retail, premium inbound tourism, destination development, passenger transport, events and digital publishing.

He is best known for his contribution to the recovery and expansion of New Zealand’s inbound cruise sector following the Covid-19 pandemic. At a time when the country’s cruise infrastructure, workforce and supplier network had been heavily disrupted, Dale played a leading role in rebuilding capability, reconnecting suppliers and preparing destinations for the return of international ships and passengers.

As head of the Akorn and Abercrombie & Kent cruise and group division in New Zealand, Dale helped grow the business from handling an estimated 5 per cent of the country’s inbound cruise activity to approximately half of the market. The achievement required considerably more than sales growth. It involved rebuilding a national network of staff, transport providers, guides, attractions, ports and regional partners after an unprecedented shutdown of international tourism.

His work contributed to the reactivation of established cruise destinations while also supporting opportunities in emerging and regional ports. It placed him at the centre of the practical restart of New Zealand cruise — connecting cruise lines, ground services, transport, destinations and local communities at a time when much of the industry was effectively being rebuilt from the ground up.

“The strongest commercial outcomes often begin with genuine engagement rather than an immediate transaction.”

An international career built at sea

Dale’s understanding of cruise began aboard the ships themselves. He spent more than eight years working at sea, travelling through 97 countries and working across every continent, in retail, sales, customer service, training, port information and destination presentations for a wide range of international cruise brands.

The cruise environment shaped his approach to leadership. Ships operate across cultures, time zones and highly changeable conditions. Weather changes itineraries. Ports can be cancelled. Guests arrive with different expectations, languages and needs. Behind every seamless passenger experience is a complex network of people solving problems under pressure.

Dale became known for combining commercial performance with human connection, helping teams develop selling styles suited to their individual strengths rather than a single script. One striking example came after a long conversation with a passenger about Mongolian history led to the sale of an emerald collection worth approximately a quarter of a million dollars — a demonstration of his belief that the best outcomes start with genuine engagement, not an immediate transaction.

International business experience

Dale’s career extended beyond tourism and cruise. In New York, he worked with an import and export business connected with Baltic amber, gaining exposure to international trade, supply chains, luxury products and cross-border commercial relationships. He later worked in Colombia, representing a mining and jewellery conglomerate across business development, marketing and sales.

These experiences strengthened his ability to operate across cultures, industries and commercial environments, and gave him an understanding of products from their source through to their final customer — from extraction and international trade to storytelling, presentation and sale. They shaped a professional style built on adaptability, moving comfortably between frontline sales, strategic development, client relationships, supplier negotiations and wider commercial planning.

Award-winning travel sales

Before moving into senior inbound-tourism leadership, Dale worked with STA Travel in New Zealand, where he quickly established himself as one of the company’s strongest performers — a leading New Zealand travel consultant and one of the top-selling agents across Australasia, earning multiple sales awards and recognition within the wider STA Travel network.

The role gave Dale a detailed understanding of how people make travel decisions. Successful travel sales meant understanding a client’s ambitions, budget, personality, concerns and appetite for discovery, then turning those factors into a journey they could believe in — an early foundation for his later work across cruise, inbound tourism, destination development and major group travel.

Growing Akorn and rebuilding New Zealand cruise

Dale’s leadership of the Akorn and Abercrombie & Kent cruise and group division brought together the different strands of his career: cruise from the shipboard perspective, travel sales and passenger behaviour, international business, luxury products, destinations, and the practical challenges of delivering complex programmes. He was responsible for major cruise accounts and bespoke touring programmes across New Zealand, coordinating ships, ports, coaches, guides, attractions, hotels, regional organisations and tourism suppliers.

Following Covid-19, the challenge became even greater. The return of cruise was not as simple as ships being placed back onto old itineraries. Staff had left the industry. Suppliers had changed. Transport capacity had tightened. Knowledge had been lost. Ports and communities needed renewed engagement, and international clients required evidence that New Zealand could again deliver at scale.

Dale became one of the driving figures in that rebuilding process. Under his leadership, Akorn expanded from a relatively small share of New Zealand’s inbound cruise activity to handling approximately half of the market, emerging as one of the country’s dominant cruise ground-handling organisations. His contribution was not confined to commercial growth — it helped rebuild confidence in New Zealand’s ability to welcome cruise ships and deliver high-quality experiences after one of the greatest disruptions the tourism industry had ever experienced.

Transport, tourism and visitor experience

Dale later brought his client-side knowledge into New Zealand’s passenger-transport industry. Through his work with Kiwi Coaches, he has helped strengthen the company’s position across tourism, cruise, conferences, major events, corporate travel, schools and nationwide group movements.

His perspective is distinctive because he spent years purchasing transport before helping sell and develop it. He understands that clients are not simply buying a bus or coach; they are relying on a provider to understand timing, luggage, port access, passenger flow, venue constraints, driver hours, airport arrivals, contingency planning and the importance of the first and final moments of a journey.

At Kiwi Coaches, Dale has contributed to business development, tourism growth, marketing, industry commentary and the company’s emergence as a more visible New Zealand transport and tourism brand — helping expand its relationships with inbound travel companies, conference organisers, cruise interests and international clients, and supporting greater public understanding of transport as an essential part of tourism and event delivery rather than an afterthought.

Developing distinctive tourism experiences

Dale has also helped develop Vintage Views, an Auckland tourism and events company built around restored vintage London double-decker buses. The concept combines transport, theatre, history and destination storytelling. Its flagship Double Decker Discovery experience presents Auckland from a perspective that is visually distinctive and emotionally memorable, while the wider business supports weddings, private events, corporate occasions and group experiences.

Vintage Views reflects Dale’s broader philosophy: transport should not always disappear into the background. In the right setting, the journey itself can become one of the most memorable parts of an experience.

Building new industry resources

Dale’s current work also includes the strategic development of MICE.co.nz and Cruisey.co.nz. MICE.co.nz is being developed as a national resource for New Zealand’s meetings, incentives, conferences and events sector, making the country’s destinations, venues, transport providers, accommodation, experiences and specialist suppliers easier for domestic and international organisers to discover and understand. Cruisey.co.nz is being developed as an authoritative cruise-industry and destination-intelligence platform for cruise lines, itinerary planners, ports, destinations, tourism suppliers and passengers considering or visiting New Zealand.

Both projects reflect Dale’s belief that New Zealand needs stronger, more accessible industry knowledge. Important information is often fragmented across individual websites, personal networks, historic documents and organisations working independently. His aim is to bring that knowledge together, preserve it and make it commercially useful — platforms designed not simply to market New Zealand, but to explain it.

Leadership style

Dale’s leadership style combines big-picture thinking with detailed delivery. He is most effective where an organisation, destination or industry is changing rapidly and needs someone capable of identifying opportunity, creating a clear narrative and turning it into practical commercial action.

His strengths include business development, industry rebuilding, sales strategy, destination positioning, stakeholder engagement, tourism logistics, content development and the ability to connect people who may not initially recognise that their interests overlap. He is comfortable working across boardrooms, ports, depots, ships, tourism offices, events and frontline customer environments, and is an advocate for visible industry leadership — the belief that companies should contribute to their sectors by publishing useful information, engaging with difficult issues and helping customers understand the wider environment behind the service they are purchasing.

Professional positioning

Benjamin Dale is an international tourism and transport leader with a demonstrated record of rebuilding capability, growing market share and connecting commercial strategy with destination development. From more than eight years aboard cruise ships and travel through 97 countries to senior leadership in New Zealand inbound tourism, award-winning travel sales, international business experience and the post-Covid recovery of the cruise sector, his career has consistently crossed traditional industry boundaries.

His defining achievement has been helping rebuild New Zealand’s inbound cruise capability after Covid-19 and growing Akorn from a comparatively small participant into a business handling approximately half of the national inbound cruise market. Today, his work across tourism, cruise, transport, MICE, destination intelligence and visitor experiences continues to focus on the same objective: helping New Zealand present itself more confidently, operate more effectively and compete more successfully on the international stage.
