The Fire Protection Association of New Zealand, SFPE NZ and IFE New Zealand will stage FireNZ 2026 at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre from 8 to 10 September, moving the sector's combined conference and tradeshow to the South Island.
FireNZ 2026, the New Zealand fire industry's combined conference and tradeshow, will run from 8 to 10 September 2026 at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. The organisers' conference page — reached from firenz.org, which resolves to the Fire Protection Association of New Zealand's site at fpanz.org/firenz/2026 — is headed "FireNZ 2026 at Te Pae Convention Centre, Christchurch 8-10 September". Te Pae's own what's-on listing carries FireNZ 2026 across the same three days and links straight back to that organiser page. The Institution of Fire Engineers New Zealand frames the 2026 edition as the FireNZ experience "heading to the South Island", following FireNZ 2025 at Shed 10 in Auckland.
FireNZ is not the property of a single body. It is presented jointly by three fire-sector organisations: the Fire Protection Association of New Zealand, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers NZ Chapter, and the Institution of Fire Engineers New Zealand Branch. That collaboration is visible in how the event is published. FPANZ hosts the conference microsite on its own domain, with the FireNZ 2026 page filed under a "Conference & Exhibition" heading in its site navigation. IFE New Zealand maintains a standing "2026 FireNZ Conference & Tradeshow" page in its news and events section and directs members to the FPANZ-hosted conference site for detail. SFPE New Zealand describes itself as the Engineering New Zealand Technical Interest Group for matters of fire engineering.
The commercial weight behind the association side is not trivial either. FPANZ lists Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Aon New Zealand, Argus Fire Systems Service and Winstone Wallboards among its platinum members, which gives some sense of the mix of regulator, insurer, contractor and manufacturer interests the conference sits across.
The exhibition is not a bolt-on. IFE New Zealand's own record of the 2023 edition at Shed 10 notes that more than 300 delegates attended the full conference, with a further 300 people attending the trade show element, which showcased products and services from 55 companies from across New Zealand. That edition also featured several keynote speakers, including seven invited from overseas, covering firefighting, fatality case studies and best-practice building and regulatory environments. The Fire Industry Awards and Gala Dinner is run inside the conference programme; IFE NZ recorded 380 people at the 2022 gala dinner.
For 2026 the organisers have issued a call for papers and published a FireNZ 2026 Delegates Prospectus for download, and the event will again use the Whova event app for agenda, networking and exhibitor listings. As at 17 August 2026 the conference site's Agenda, Speakers and Exhibitors pages were live but not yet carrying public content, so the 2026 programme, speaker line-up and exhibitor list remain to be released.
The three presenting bodies between them cover most of the professional territory: fire engineers working under the Engineering New Zealand umbrella through SFPE NZ, fire engineering and fire service professionals through the IFE's New Zealand branch, and the fire protection contracting, servicing and manufacturing trade through FPANZ. In practice that makes FireNZ the sector's annual meeting point for design, compliance, product and response, rather than a conference aimed at one discipline.
Te Pae Christchurch sits at 188 Oxford Terrace in the central city, on the Ōtākaro Avon River. It officially opened in December 2021 and hosted its first conference in May 2022; the venue reports 867 events and 422,000 visitors since opening. It offers 28,000 square metres of flexible event space, and the room stock suits a conference-plus-exhibition format: a tiered auditorium seating up to 1,364 and divisible into two, an Exhibition Hall taking 2,420 theatre-style or 1,440 for a banquet, the Rivers Room for banquets of up to 860, and the Conway, Dobson and Bealey clusters for concurrent sessions.
The centre is Toitū net carbonzero certified — which it states makes it the first convention centre in the world with that accreditation — alongside Toitū Enviromark Gold and Qualmark Gold. Its entrance and public areas are step free, with drop-off directly in front of the main entrance on Oxford Terrace, and multiple off-street parking options, EV charging and cycle stands within easy walk. It is managed by Legends Global.
FireNZ is a textbook rotating national association conference: Auckland in 2023 and 2025, Wellington's Tākina in 2024, Christchurch in 2026. That rotation is exactly the repeat, multi-city business that New Zealand's convention centre network was built for, and it lands in Christchurch in an early-spring window that has become busy. Te Pae's diary shows the Australasian Weeds Conference immediately before FireNZ in late August, then Tech Summit '26, ARPS 2026, the CBAFF Conference and the New Zealand Sterile Sciences Association's 50th annual conference all inside the following fortnight — a concentrated run of association business through September 2026.
It also matters because of what FireNZ brings with it. A conference carrying a substantial exhibition floor, an awards gala and an audience drawn from regulators, engineers, insurers and contractors generates multi-day delegate spend and a wider trade-visitor audience on top of the registered programme.
