Canterbury Tech has confirmed its flagship Tech Summit returns to Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre on Wednesday 16 September 2026, running 8.00am to 6.30pm across three concurrent stages. The published programme is complete, tickets are on sale, and the event appears on Te Pae's own What's On calendar.
Canterbury Tech will stage Tech Summit '26 at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre on Wednesday 16 September 2026, with a full programme now published and registration open. The organiser's official event site, techsummit.nz, confirms the date and venue on its landing page and carries a complete session-by-session schedule that runs from 8.00am registrations through to networking drinks finishing at 6.30pm. Te Pae's own What's On calendar independently lists "Tech Summit '26" for 16 September 2026, and the ChristchurchNZ visitor listing carries the same date and an 8.00am-6.30pm window.
The summit is convened by Canterbury Tech, which describes itself on its own About page as "Aotearoa New Zealand's largest and most active regional tech community." The organisation states it was founded in 2002 "during the early wave of internet-driven business growth in Otautahi Christchurch," and that its membership now spans software, hardware, electronics, engineering, science and manufacturing companies, from early-stage startups through to global tech leaders.
Canterbury Tech positions the summit as the anchor of a year-round calendar. Its About page refers to "a packed calendar of events, from weekly meetups and industry panels to our flagship Tech Summit in September and a growing Tech Week Festival," and notes the organisation is run by a small staff team supported by a volunteer board, funded through membership and sponsorship. Two named staff are listed publicly: Alex Thorpe as Operations and Tech Summit Manager, and Henry Lawson as Community, Events and Membership Manager. The organisation's own events calendar shows the summit sitting alongside regular Lunchtime Tech Sessions, an Innovators Meetup and AI-adoption panels through August and September 2026.
On scale and longevity, trade title Canterbury Today reported in September 2024 that the summit had reached its twenty-first edition, held at Te Pae on 27 September that year, and described it as "the largest industry-led annual conference," drawing "up to 800 attendees" from around New Zealand and internationally. The same report traced the organisation's roots to a 1990s tech barbecue that led to the founding of Canterbury Software Incorporated in 2002. Canterbury Tech's own 2019 archive material shows the event drawing more than 700 people when it was held at Christchurch's Air Force Museum, before its move into the purpose-built convention centre.
The published 2026 programme is built around three concurrent streams running from late morning: a Business stream on the main stage, a Technical stream on the Publica Technical Stage, and a Canterbury Focus stream on the Smudge Stage. The main stage carries sponsor branding as the ASX Auditorium.
The day opens with a welcome and mihi whakatau at 9.00am, followed by an opening address and a 10.00am opening keynote from Stefania Druga, a research scientist at Sakana AI in Tokyo, speaking on why the smartest AI still is not a collaborator you can trust. The closing keynote at 4.30pm is Ben Cowen, founder and chief executive of Into the Cryptoverse, on investing through the cycles, covering the relationship between artificial intelligence, productivity, central bank policy, interest rates and global liquidity. Broadcaster Stacey Morrison is listed as summit MC.
The stream programme leans heavily on operating founders and practitioners rather than vendors. Confirmed speakers include Matty Blomfield of Hectre, James Fuller of Hnry, Serge van Dam, Scott Willson of Antlar and Forbury, Nicola Joyce of Carnedd, Toby Cox of Geodde, Charles Herring of WitFoo on cybersecurity in the age of AI, and Shah Aslam and John Hamilton of Ocean Flyer on seaglider development. The Canterbury Focus stream includes a KiwiSaaS-led session on the SaaS market, a performance-technology panel featuring three Crusaders Rugby staff alongside Parallel42, and a four-founder startup panel.
Beyond the stages, the organiser states the summit includes an exhibition hall with more than 25 exhibitors, plus an ASX Innovation Zone, a Ministry of Awesome Startup Zone and a Show Us Your Tech Zone. Catering, barista coffee and a closing networking function are included in attendance. A separate post-summit workshops programme is also published. Tickets are sold through an external registration platform and, per the organiser's FAQ, are not available at the door.
Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre sits at 188 Oxford Terrace in the central city. The venue reports 28,000 square metres of flexible event space. Its Auditorium seats 1,364 theatre-style and divides into two rooms of 682; the Exhibition Hall takes 2,420 theatre, 1,440 banquet or 2,845 cocktail; and the Conway, Dobson and Bealey room clusters provide breakout capacity. The centre is Toitu Enviromark Gold and net carbonzero certified and is managed by ASM Global.
For out-of-town delegates, Te Pae states it is a 15 to 20 minute drive from Christchurch International Airport, which the venue describes as the regional hub for South Island flights. The venue reports more than 2,500 hotel rooms within a ten-minute walk, across a central-city cluster that includes Crowne Plaza, Sudima Christchurch City, Novotel Cathedral Square, Fable, The George, Distinction and Ibis. Christchurch's flat, walkable grid and the Otakaro Avon promenade make on-foot movement between hotels and the centre straightforward.
There is no car park at Te Pae itself. The organiser's FAQ and the venue both point to secure off-street parking nearby, with EV charging and cycle stands, taxi drop-off directly outside the building, and bike hoops on Oxford Terrace. Access is step-free throughout public areas, with drop-off and pick-up on Oxford Terrace or at the Armagh Street corner.
For the New Zealand business events sector, Tech Summit is a useful marker of what a mature, member-owned association conference looks like. It is not a commercially promoted roadshow: it is run by an industry body, funded through membership and sponsorship, and it has held an annual September slot for more than two decades while growing from a museum hall to an international-standard convention centre. That trajectory, and a delegate base drawn from across the country rather than only Canterbury, makes it one of the more reliable single-day drivers of mid-week central-city bed nights in Christchurch's spring calendar.
