Bus and Coach Association conference returns to Auckland's Viaduct Events Centre, 21-23 September

MICE editorial — 23 August 2026 Auckland Tier A

The Bus and Coach Association New Zealand will hold its 2026 annual conference at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland from 21 to 23 September, with a three-day programme covering an AGM, keynote and policy sessions, a trade and vehicle display, an off-site day on Waiheke Island and a closing gala dinner.

The Bus and Coach Association (BCA) New Zealand will hold its 2026 annual conference at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland from Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 September. The association's event page sets out a three-day programme built around an annual general meeting, keynote and policy sessions, a trade and vehicle display, an off-site day on Waiheke Island and a closing gala dinner.

Proceedings open late on 21 September with the association's annual general meeting, followed by a welcome function held in the venue's Waiheke Room 2.

The 22 September session runs from a morning start through keynote addresses and guided trade sessions, with a brunch served among the trade stands. The published agenda then has the venue closing at midday so delegates can travel to Waiheke Island for an afternoon and evening function at Batch Winery. Speakers listed for the morning are Simon Bridges, NZTA board chair, chief executive of the Auckland Business Chamber and a former transport minister, and Scott Mehrtens, chair of TECNZ and chief executive of Leisure Time Group. Stephen Yarwood is listed as the guest speaker for the Waiheke day.

The closing day on 23 September is the fullest. After a breakfast session, the agenda lists Sir John Kirwan; Nick Leggett, chief executive of Infrastructure New Zealand; a panel on autonomous vehicles drawing speakers from Alexander Dennis, Terramotive and Yutong, Electric Autobus, Sinolink, and Intelligent Transportation Systems NZ and Ohmio; economist Brad Olsen; and Dom Kalasih, chief executive of Transporting New Zealand. An election panel and question session brings together MPs and transport spokespeople from five parliamentary parties — Dan Bidois (National), Andy Foster (NZ First), Julie Anne Genter (Green), Cameron Luxton (ACT) and Tangi Utikere (Labour). The day closes with a happy hour and a gala dinner running from 7pm.

Who runs it

The Bus and Coach Association describes itself on its website as the authoritative voice of New Zealand's bus and coach industry, a role it dates to 1931, and says it represents the majority of the country's bus and coach companies along with vehicle manufacturers and industry suppliers.

The association is led by chief executive Delaney Myers, described on its site as a former senior public servant who held national accountability for public transport at Waka Kotahi and for school transport services at the Ministry of Education. Its work is organised through four advisory committees covering public transport, school transport, tourism and charter services, and technical and regulatory matters. It publishes a monthly industry magazine, Circular, and a weekly newsletter.

The conference sits within a wider calendar that includes sector seminars and branch meetings. The association's membership pages describe the annual conference and its seminars as an opportunity for policy discussion, education and debate, and for networking between operators and suppliers.

Who it's for

The event page describes the conference as bringing together industry professionals, clients and suppliers, and says it is intended for newcomers and long-standing attendees alike.

Registration categories listed on the event page cover full delegate passes, a single-day pass for the Wednesday, a gala-dinner-only ticket, a non-member ticket, and trade and vehicle display packages that bundle a 3m by 3m stand with one full delegate pass.

The published exhibitor list for 2026 runs to around 18 companies and is weighted towards vehicle manufacturers, importers and fleet suppliers, among them Alexander Dennis, Volvo Buses, BLK Auto, Kiwibus Builders, Hanover Displays and Coachwork Central, alongside fuel, insurance and fleet-software firms.

A partners programme has been reinstated for 2026, subject to a minimum number of bookings. The event page pairs a Waiheke day with delegates on the Tuesday with a guided Auckland food and boutique tour on the Wednesday.

The venue

The Viaduct Events Centre stands on the Halsey Street wharf extension in Auckland's Wynyard Quarter, at the north-western edge of the city centre and a short walk from the Viaduct Harbour. It opened in August 2011 as a stand-alone, multi-purpose facility of roughly 6,000 square metres with eight separate rooms configured for conferences, gala dinners and exhibitions.

The centre was taken out of the events market to serve as Emirates Team New Zealand's base for the 36th America's Cup, and reopened in 2023 under Auckland Conventions, Venues & Events, a division of the council-controlled organisation Tātaki Auckland Unlimited.

The conference makes use of the venue's room stock rather than a single hall: the welcome function is scheduled for the Waiheke Room 2, while the main programme, the trade display and the catered sessions share the wider floor. The association has arranged room availability with two central Auckland hotels, M Social and Mövenpick, both within the central-city area.

Why it matters for New Zealand MICE

The conference is a worked example of an association event using a mid-sized central Auckland venue for a full multi-format programme: governance business, plenary keynotes, a trade exhibition, a full-day off-site excursion by water, and a formal dinner, all inside three days and without moving cities.

It is also a marker of the Viaduct Events Centre's activity since its 2023 return to the events market, and of demand from trade associations for venues that can hold a vehicle and equipment display alongside a conference floor.

The programme itself is unusually policy-dense, with a sitting NZTA board chair, the head of Infrastructure New Zealand, an economist and a five-party election panel scheduled across the closing day. For the wider business events sector, the substance of that discussion — public transport funding, regulation and autonomous vehicle technology — concerns the land transport network that conference and incentive programmes across New Zealand depend on.
