Water New Zealand Conference & Expo returns to Hamilton in September 2026

MICE editorial — 23 August 2026 Hamilton Tier A

New Zealand's largest water sector conference and trade expo runs at Claudelands Conference & Exhibition Centre in Hamilton from 22 to 24 September 2026. The 2026 edition follows a 2025 Christchurch event that Water New Zealand says drew more than 2,250 delegates and exhibitors from 50 countries, and brings a national infrastructure conference back to a regional host city.

The Water New Zealand Conference & Expo is scheduled for Claudelands Conference & Exhibition Centre in Hamilton, with the event's dedicated website at waternzconference.org.nz heading its homepage "Tuesday 22 - Thursday 24 September 2026". Water New Zealand's own events calendar lists the same event at Claudelands, Hamilton, running 21-24 September 2026 from 9am to 5pm, and links directly to the conference site. The extra day at the front of the organiser's listing is consistent with recent editions: Water New Zealand listed a pre-conference workshop day ahead of the main programme in 2024, and an exhibition pack-in day plus pre-conference workshops in 2025.

The conference website is live, with registrations open and nominations open for the Water New Zealand Excellence Awards. The organiser has published no delegate or exhibitor forecast for the Hamilton edition.

Recent editions give the scale. Water New Zealand's conference page records that the 2025 event, delivered in Ōtautahi Christchurch alongside the 10th IWA-ASPIRE Conference, attracted more than 2,250 delegates and exhibitors from 50 countries, which the association describes as a record for water sector conferences in New Zealand. Ahead of the 2023 Wellington edition at Tākina, Water New Zealand reported more than 1,200 delegates, around 100 keynote and technical presentations and 180 exhibition stands; WellingtonNZ, the capital's business events agency, later put final attendance at more than 1,600 delegates across 185 exhibition sites.

Who runs it

Water New Zealand is the organiser. The association describes itself as the country's largest water industry body and a not-for-profit with more than 3,000 corporate and individual members drawn from regional councils and territorial authorities, public research organisations, consultants, suppliers, government agencies and scientists. It is based in Wellington and is led by chief executive Gillian Blythe, with Tim Gibson as president.

The conference is delivered by professional conference organiser Avenues Event Management, which lists the account as running since 2005 and states the conference itself has been running for 63 years. Avenues describes a three-day event with plenary sessions, a six-stream technical programme and 194 expo stands, and says the expo sells out within ten minutes with a waitlist behind it. A Water New Zealand quote on the same page refers to more than 800 delegates and 194 expo stands integrated into the main programme, and Avenues notes the conference dinner has had to move into the arena to fit everyone.

Host cities rotate. Verified editions include Claudelands in Hamilton in September 2019, Tākina in Wellington in October 2023, Claudelands again on 25-27 September 2024, and Te Pae Convention Centre and the Christchurch Town Hall on 29 September to 3 October 2025. The 2025 event was originally intended for the New Zealand International Convention Centre in Auckland; Water New Zealand records that after SkyCity announced on 7 February 2025 that the venue's opening was delayed to February 2026, the board moved the conference to Christchurch.

Who it's for

The audience is the three waters sector: drinking water, wastewater and stormwater. Water New Zealand's abstract topic list for the conference covers drinking water quality and treatment, wastewater treatment and networks, procurement and asset management, pipelines, construction, policy and regulatory frameworks, digital and data, science, climate change and sustainability, te ao Māori and workforce. Delegates come from councils and water services entities, regulators, consultancies, contractors, suppliers, research organisations and government agencies. The expo is a trade floor for water and wastewater technology suppliers, and the programme includes the Water New Zealand Excellence Awards and an Innovation Forum pitch session.

The venue

Claudelands Conference & Exhibition Centre sits on the corner of Heaphy Terrace and Brooklyn Road in Claudelands, about a ten-minute walk from Hamilton's CBD and set within 34 hectares of parkland. Hamilton and Waikato Tourism's venue listing puts the conference centre at 1,200-plus delegates with 11 breakout spaces and complimentary delegate parking. The combined Heaphy Room seats 900 theatre-style or 650 for a banquet and divides into three. Four exhibition halls run 1,900sqm (A), 1,900sqm (B), 2,065sqm (C) and 1,063sqm (D). The adjoining Claudelands Arena holds 6,000 and has been used for the conference's plenary and dinner.

Tourism New Zealand's Hamilton business events factsheet describes Claudelands as the city's largest venue and notes Hamilton Airport is 15km from the city centre with Air New Zealand services to and from Wellington, Christchurch and Palmerston North. There are no scheduled flights from Auckland; the factsheet directs international arrivals to fly into Auckland and travel roughly 90 minutes south by road. The same factsheet counts more than 2,500 accommodation rooms close to Hamilton's central city, with a further 1,500 across the rest of the Waikato region.

Why it matters for New Zealand MICE

A national conference of this size landing outside Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch is the story. On the two most recent published figures, the event has run at 1,600-plus delegates in Wellington and 2,250-plus delegates and exhibitors in Christchurch, both purpose-built convention centres in cities with deep hotel inventory. Hamilton's roughly 2,500 central-city rooms will absorb a multi-day conference plus a large exhibitor contingent that arrives early for pack-in and stays through pack-out, and the Waikato region's additional 1,500 rooms sit outside walking distance of the venue.

Capacity at the venue is also a live constraint the sector has already flagged. Avenues has publicly written that the conference is outgrowing the spaces available to it, that the expo sells out in ten minutes with a waitlist, and that the dinner had to move into the arena. Claudelands' 1,200-plus conference capacity and roughly 6,900sqm of exhibition halls set a practical ceiling well below the Christchurch turnout.

The road link matters too. Without direct Auckland air services into Hamilton, the largest single delegate catchment in the country arrives by road, which shifts the logistics load onto coach and rental capacity rather than airport transfers. For a regional host city, the Hamilton edition is a test of whether a national infrastructure conference at this scale can be run outside the big three centres, and the answer will be read closely by other associations weighing regional bids.
