Ashburton A&P Show returns to the showgrounds for two days, 30–31 October 2026

MICE editorial — 02 October 2026 Ashburton Tier A

The Ashburton A&P Show 2026 runs 30–31 October 2026 at the Ashburton Showgrounds (66 Brucefield Ave, Netherby), organised by the Ashburton A&P Association, Mid Canterbury's largest and longest-running annual event. Founded in 1877 with its first show in 1878, the two-day agricultural and pastoral show combines livestock and equestrian competitions, live shearing, trade sites and family attractions.

Ashburton A&P Show 2026

The Ashburton A&P Show returns to the Ashburton Showgrounds on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October 2026, the official Ashburton A&P Association website confirms. The Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand's event listing corroborates the dates, noting the show opens from 8am on the Friday and runs through to 5pm on the Saturday. Held at 66 Brucefield Ave in the Netherby area of town, it is billed by the association as "the region's largest, longest-running annual event" — an agricultural and pastoral (A&P) show rather than a conference, combining rural competition with a community day out.

Who runs it

The show is organised by the Ashburton A&P Association, whose stated mission is "promoting excellence in agriculture & goodwill between town and country." According to the association's own history, it was founded in 1877 at a meeting of farmers at the Somerset Hotel, with the inaugural show held on 15 November 1878 at Tinwald. The show has run almost continuously since, pausing only from 1942 to 1944 when the grounds were used as a WW2 army camp. Today the association operates with a large committee supported by a team of volunteers, and also runs ploughing matches, prime stock sales and annual ram fairs alongside the flagship show.

Who it's for and programme

The Ashburton A&P Show is a community agricultural show aimed at the wider Mid Canterbury public, farming families and townspeople alike. The official programme spans livestock and equestrian events, including showjumping and a heifer competition, plus live shearing demonstrations that put the district's primary-industry roots on display. Alongside the rural competition, the grounds host trade sites, markets and food stalls, with family attractions such as a ferris wheel, sideshows, candy floss, and children's crafts and colouring competitions. Recent editions have also featured crowd-pleasers such as gumboot throwing and dog trials, per the Otago Daily Times' coverage of the show.

Venue and delegate context

The Ashburton Showgrounds sit at 66 Brucefield Ave in Ashburton, a Canterbury service town roughly 85km south-west of Christchurch on State Highway 1. The grounds are an established multi-use showground with pavilions, a grandstand and extensive open ground, long used for equestrian, livestock and community events. Ashburton is a flat, compact town with on-site and street parking around the showgrounds and a range of motels, motor lodges and hotels for visitors travelling from across the region. Its position on the main road and rail corridor between Christchurch and the south makes it readily accessible by car for day visitors.

Why it matters for NZ MICE

Long-running regional A&P shows like Ashburton's are a reminder that New Zealand's business-events infrastructure extends well beyond the main-centre convention halls. Purpose-built showgrounds with pavilions, grandstands and large flat sites are year-round venues for exhibitions, trade displays and community gatherings, and they anchor significant seasonal visitor draw into provincial towns. For the MICE sector, these regional showgrounds and the volunteer-run associations behind them represent both a proven events-delivery capability outside the big cities and a window into the agricultural economy that underpins much of New Zealand's regional conference and incentive activity.
