42nd Asia Pacific Metrology Programme General Assembly 2026

MICE editorial — 03 October 2026 Wellington Tier A

The 42nd Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) General Assembly runs 14–21 November 2026 at InterContinental Wellington, hosted by New Zealand's Measurement Standards Laboratory (MSL, part of Callaghan Innovation), drawing 400+ delegates from 38+ economies. A rare inbound international government/standards congress for the Wellington MICE market.

What the General Assembly is

The 42nd Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) General Assembly is the regional metrology body's flagship annual gathering, held 14-21 November 2026 at the InterContinental Wellington, according to the official event site (apmp2026.nz). It is a week-long government and measurement-science congress rather than a trade show: the organiser schedule runs Technical Committee and Focus Group meetings and workshops from Saturday 14 to Wednesday 18 November, a one-day Symposium on Thursday 19 November, and the formal General Assembly across Friday 20 and Saturday 21 November.

APMP is the regional metrology organisation for the Asia-Pacific, coordinating national measurement standards (the SI units) across member National Metrology Institutes. Per apmpweb.org, it works through Technical Committees covering areas such as mass, length, thermometry, time and frequency, and electricity and magnetism, plus Focus Groups on applied challenges including climate change, clean water, food safety and medical metrology.

Who runs it

The host is the Measurement Standards Laboratory of New Zealand (MSL), which the measurement.govt.nz news page describes as hosting "a major international metrology congress" coming to Wellington in November. MSL is New Zealand's national metrology institute, responsible for maintaining measurement standards in line with the International System of Units (SI) and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025; it operates under Callaghan Innovation within New Zealand's science and innovation system.

The event is managed by professional conference organiser Conference Innovators, whose conference.nz calendar lists the assembly and whose project manager Charlotte Emery (charlotte@conference.nz) is the named contact on the official site. APMP itself is the controlling international body; MSL is the national host NMI delivering the 2026 edition.

Who attends and the programme

The organiser site states the assembly expects "more than 400 delegates from over 38 economies." Attendees are overwhelmingly delegates from government metrology institutes and standards bodies across the Asia-Pacific. The programme, per the official programme page, is built around Technical Committees (TC), Focus Groups (FG), Working Groups such as Proficiency Testing, and restricted committee meetings including the Executive Committee and TC Chairs. A public-facing Symposium sits mid-week, and MSL laboratory tours are scheduled for the Wednesday and Saturday.

Wellington venue and delegate movement

The InterContinental Wellington, named on the official site as the venue, sits on the central waterfront near Lambton Quay in the capital's commercial core, placing meetings, accommodation and the CBD within walking distance for a delegation of this size. Wellington International Airport is roughly a 20-30 minute drive from the central waterfront, and the compact scale of central Wellington means most delegate accommodation and dining sit within a short radius of the host hotel. This is reported as general Wellington context; specific accommodation and transport arrangements sit with the organiser and PCO.

Why it matters for NZ MICE

A multi-day international government and standards congress of 400-plus overseas delegates is a comparatively rare inbound win for the Wellington business-events market. It anchors a full week of November 2026 room nights and venue use in the capital, brings a technical government audience from across the Asia-Pacific, and reflects New Zealand's standing - through MSL and Callaghan Innovation - within the regional metrology community under the wider APAC/BIPM framework.
