ANZAOMS 2026: trans-Tasman oral & maxillofacial surgeons meet at Te Pae

MICE editorial — 31 July 2026 Christchurch Tier A

The ANZAOMS Annual Scientific Meeting 2026 is the trans-Tasman oral and maxillofacial surgery congress, held 6–8 August 2026 at Te Pae in Christchurch. Run by ANZAOMS and co-located with the NZ Association of Orthodontists' research group, it pairs a scientific programme with an exhibition and a gala dinner at the Christchurch Town Hall.

ANZAOMS 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting comes to Christchurch

The Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ANZAOMS) will hold its 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) at Te Pae, the Christchurch Convention Centre, from 6 to 8 August 2026. The meeting is a full scientific congress with a co-located exhibition and social programme, capped by a gala dinner in the heritage Christchurch Town Hall.

Who runs it

ANZAOMS is the peak professional body for the oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) specialty across Australia and New Zealand. According to ANZAOMS, the association took its current form in 1983 and, since 1996, has required its surgeons to hold both medical and dental qualifications, reflecting the complex nature of surgery of the mouth, jaws, face, head and neck. The ASM is described by ANZAOMS as central to its mission of fostering scientific curiosity and reflecting on current developments and future trends in the specialty. The 2026 meeting is convened under ANZAOMS by Dr Angus Cameron, with event management handled by WALDRONSMITH Management of South Melbourne.

Who it is for and the programme

The ASM is aimed at oral and maxillofacial surgeons, trainees, nurses and industry partners from both sides of the Tasman and internationally. Alongside the core scientific sessions, the programme includes pre-ASM workshops on Wednesday 5 August (such as a SORG Academy workshop on orthognathic surgery), breakfast sessions, a nurses' workshop and a call for abstracts. In a notable addition for 2026, the meeting is co-located with the New Zealand Association of Orthodontists (NZAO) Educational and Research Development Group, which joins for joint plenary sessions on the Friday and runs its own sessions on the Saturday, aligning the two specialties. The meeting also appears on the international IAOMS event calendar, underlining its standing within the global OMS community.

Venue and delegate logistics

Te Pae is a purpose-built convention and exhibition venue in Christchurch's rebuilt central city. It can host up to 2,000 delegates and offers a 1,364-seat auditorium, around 2,800 square metres of exhibition space and 24 meeting rooms — capacity well suited to a plenary-plus-exhibition medical congress of this scale. The central-city location places delegates within walking distance of the gala venue at the Christchurch Town Hall and of a dense cluster of city-centre hotels, with Christchurch International Airport roughly 20 minutes away by road, easing trans-Tasman and domestic arrivals. The official programme also flags optional pre- and post-ASM touring, with the Canterbury ski fields (Mt Hutt about 1.5 hours from the city) noted as a drawcard for the August dates.

Why it matters for New Zealand MICE

Securing a rotating trans-Tasman specialist medical congress at Te Pae is a strong result for Christchurch's business-events sector. It brings a high-value, professionally engaged delegate audience into the central city during winter, combines a surgical scientific programme with an exhibition and a marquee civic-venue gala, and demonstrates the South Island's capacity to win recurring Australasian medical meetings against Australian host cities.
