Australasian fluid mechanics comes to Christchurch: inside AFMC2026

MICE editorial — 27 October 2026 Christchurch Tier A

The 25th Australasian Fluid Mechanics Conference runs 6–10 December 2026 at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, hosted with the Australasian Fluid Mechanics Society.

The 25th Australasian Fluid Mechanics Conference (AFMC2026) brings the long-running Australasian fluid-mechanics research community to Christchurch from 6 to 10 December 2026. It is the 25th edition of a biennial series that began in 1962, and the programme spans the breadth of fluid mechanics — from fundamental turbulence and computational fluid dynamics to geophysical, biomedical, industrial and environmental flows.

Who runs it

The conference is organised in collaboration with the Australasian Fluid Mechanics Society (AFMS), the field's controlling society across Australia and New Zealand, and is hosted by the University of Canterbury. The local organising committee is co-chaired by Professor Mathieu Sellier — also the AFMS President — and Professor Stefanie Gutschmidt, supported by a University of Canterbury team with members drawn from Earth Sciences New Zealand.

Who it's for and the programme

The event is aimed at academic researchers, postgraduate students and industry practitioners in fluid dynamics. Delegates submit abstracts and full papers through EasyChair, with an abstract deadline of 30 June 2026 and full papers due 30 August 2026; the programme is expected to pair keynote and invited talks with contributed technical sessions across the week.

The venue and the logistics

Sessions are held at the University of Canterbury's Ilam campus, in the Rata (Engineering Core) building at 63 Creyke Road, Ilam, in Christchurch's western suburbs. The campus sits a short drive from the central city and roughly ten minutes from Christchurch International Airport, whose trans-Tasman and domestic links matter for an Australasian delegate base. On-campus and nearby street parking is available, though the organisers note parking rules are actively enforced; accommodation guidance is directed to a dedicated section of the conference site.

Why it matters for New Zealand MICE

For the New Zealand business-events sector, AFMC2026 is a clear example of an academic society congress anchored by a host university rather than a dedicated convention centre. It draws a multi-day international and trans-Tasman delegate flow into Christchurch in early summer, generating demand for accommodation, airport and campus transport, and social-programme venues across the city during the shoulder of the main summer season.
