Canterbury Tech confirms Tech Summit '26 at Te Pae Christchurch on 16 September

MICE editorial — 29 August 2026 Christchurch Tier A

Canterbury Tech's flagship one-day conference returns to Te Pae Christchurch on Wednesday 16 September 2026, with three concurrent streams, 25-plus exhibitors and two follow-on workshops the next day.

Tech Summit '26 takes place on Wednesday 16 September 2026 at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, 188 Oxford Terrace. The date and venue are stated on the event's own website, techsummit.nz, and are independently carried on Te Pae Christchurch's what's-on calendar, which lists the summit under that date and links straight through to the organiser's site.

It is a single-day conference. The programme published by the organiser opens with registration and networking from 8.00am, moves into a welcome and mihi whakatau at 9.00am, and closes with networking drinks and nibbles from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Two optional half-day workshops follow at the same venue on Thursday 17 September, giving the event a two-day footprint in the city for delegates who take them up.

Who runs it

The summit is run by Canterbury Tech, a membership body that on its own About page describes itself as "Aotearoa New Zealand's largest and most active regional tech community". Canterbury Tech says it was founded in 2002 during the early wave of internet-driven business growth in Ōtautahi Christchurch, and that its membership now spans software, hardware, electronics, engineering, science and manufacturing companies, from early-stage startups to global tech firms.

Canterbury Tech runs a year-round calendar — monthly TechTuesday networking, lunchtime sessions, industry panels and a growing Tech Week Festival — and names the September Tech Summit as its flagship. The organisation states it is run by a small staff team and a volunteer board, funded through membership and sponsorship; Alex Thorpe is listed as Operations and Tech Summit Manager. The summit's lineage is long: Canterbury Tech's own 2019 announcement for that year's edition describes a summit already drawing more than 700 attendees, then held at Christchurch's Air Force Museum. The move to Te Pae reflects both the venue's opening and the event's growth.

ChristchurchNZ, the city's economic development and destination agency, is named on the programme as sponsor of both the opening and closing keynote slots, and also carries the event on its own what's-on listing. Other named partners include ASX, which sponsors the main auditorium and an innovation zone, and Publica, which sponsors the technical stage.

Who it's for

The organiser pitches the summit at everyone working in or adjacent to the tech sector — founders, executives, developers, product and digital teams, data and business analysts, students and professionals who support the industry. Ticketing is tiered by Canterbury Tech membership, with a separate student member category, and the organiser notes that tickets are not sold at the door.

ChristchurchNZ's listing frames the value proposition for employers sending teams: concentrated professional development in a single day, exposure to hundreds of people across Aotearoa's tech community, and visibility for companies that show up in numbers. Morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and the closing networking function are included in the ticket, with dietary requirements catered when flagged at booking.

What's on the programme

The 2026 programme runs three concurrent streams from late morning: a Business stream in the ASX Auditorium, a Technical stream on the Publica Technical Stage, and a Canterbury Focus stream on the Smudge Stage. Stacey Morrison is listed as MC.

The opening keynote is Stefania Druga, a research scientist at Sakana AI in Tokyo, speaking on the limits of AI as a trustworthy collaborator. The closing keynote is Ben Cowen, founder and chief executive of Into the Cryptoverse, on investing through market cycles, drawing on macroeconomic analysis of AI, productivity, central bank policy and global liquidity.

In between, the organiser has programmed a mix of scale-up operators and technical practitioners: Matty Blomfield of Hectre on iteration speed, James Fuller of Hnry on building a fintech in a regulated industry, Nicola Joyce of Carnedd on responding to a major healthcare cyber incident, Charles Herring of WitFoo on cybersecurity in an AI era, Scott Willson of Antlar and Forbury on selling enterprise AI, and Serge van Dam on startup success and failure. Ocean Flyer's Shah Aslam and John Hamilton cover the development of seagliders and what they could mean for New Zealand transport. Canterbury Focus sessions include a KiwiSaaS-led panel with Partly and Appetise, a performance-data panel featuring Crusaders Rugby staff and Parallel42, and a founder panel spanning WorkX, The Others Club, Themelia and Eat Choice.

Alongside the sessions, the organiser says there is an exhibition hall with more than 25 exhibitors, plus an ASX Innovation Zone, a Ministry of Awesome Startup Zone and a Show Us Your Tech Zone. The two Thursday workshops are a hands-on AI agent build with Stefania Druga (10.30am to 1.00pm) and a market-cycle investing workshop with Ben Cowen (2.00pm to 5.00pm), both at Te Pae.

The venue

Te Pae Christchurch opened in 2022 and is managed by ASM Global. The venue reports 12,880 square metres of flexible event space, a 1,364-seat tiered auditorium that divides into two, an exhibition hall taking up to 2,845 people in cocktail format, the riverside Rivers Room, and clusters of meeting rooms across the ground and first floors. It holds Toitū Enviromark Gold and Net Carbon Zero certification.

Delegate movement is straightforward because the venue sits in the middle of the central city. Te Pae states it is a 15 to 20 minute drive from Christchurch International Airport, and points to Metro bus services connecting the airport and city centre, taxis and shuttles, rental cars, rideshare, and shared e-scooters and e-bikes. The building is step-free through its public areas, with drop-off and pick-up directly in front of the Oxford Terrace entrance and at the corner of Armagh Street and Oxford Terrace. Hagley Park is a roughly ten-minute walk away.

There is no car park at Te Pae itself. The organiser's FAQ notes secure parking nearby, taxi drop-off outside the building, bike hoops on Oxford Terrace and covered cycle parking close by, a free coat check at the Guest Services Desk in the ground floor foyer, and wifi throughout for the duration of the conference. For out-of-town delegates, Canterbury Tech lists negotiated accommodation arrangements at Crowne Plaza Christchurch and Fable Christchurch, both within walking distance of the centre.

Why it matters for New Zealand business events

Tech Summit is one of the clearest examples in the country of a regional industry association growing a members' event into a venue-scale conference. It is association-owned rather than commercially promoted, it fills a purpose-built convention centre for a full day with three streams and an exhibition floor, and it now extends into a second day of workshops — the kind of programme extension that lifts room nights rather than just day attendance.

It also shows the destination-agency model working as intended. ChristchurchNZ sponsors the keynote slots, lists the event on its consumer channel, and benefits from a September date that brings national and international speakers into the central city. For Christchurch, an anchor event on a fixed annual date at Te Pae is exactly the repeat business the venue was built to carry.
