Indoor and wet-weather team building activities in New Zealand

MICE editorial — 24 August 2026 Tier A

223 New Zealand team building operators can run indoors — the wet-weather backup list every conference programme needs.

Every New Zealand conference programme needs a wet-weather answer. The good news: 223 of the team-building operators listed on MICE can run indoors — 131 are indoor-only and a further 92 run either indoors or outdoors depending on conditions. That is close to half of every activity operator in the directory.

Why this matters more here than most places

New Zealand's shoulder seasons are unpredictable and a lot of the country's signature corporate activities are outdoor by design — jet boating, farm experiences, coastal sailing. If your social programme has a single outdoor plan and no backup, you are one forecast away from a scramble. The fix is to identify an indoor-capable operator of similar capacity in the same city before you contract the outdoor option.

Where the indoor depth is

  • Wellington — 47 indoor-capable operators, the deepest in the country
  • Christchurch — 38
  • Auckland — 29
  • Queenstown — 18
  • Rotorua — 14
  • Invercargill and Hamilton — 11 each
  • New Plymouth — 10
  • Dunedin — 8, Napier — 7, Nelson — 6, Taupō — 6, Whangārei — 5, Tauranga — 5, Blenheim — 5, Ashburton — 3

Even the smaller conference destinations have a usable indoor list. Browse by region under /category/activities.

Capacity is the real constraint

Indoor venues have walls, and walls cap numbers. Of the 223 indoor-capable operators, only 12 list a maximum group of 100 or more. The largest are Corporate Challenge Events Auckland (up to 1,000), Velocity Valley in Rotorua (600), Rainbow's End Corporate Events (500), Game Over Christchurch (400), Skyline Queenstown (300), Walter Peak High Country Farm — RealNZ (275), Game Over Queenstown (220), Kinross (200), Rockup Adventures in Christchurch (200), Serve Social (150), Thrillzone (100) and iFLY Queenstown (100).

If your outdoor plan A holds 250 people and your indoor plan B holds 60, you do not have a plan B. Match the capacities, not just the cities.

The strongest backup: mobile operators

56 indoor-capable operators are mobile — they come to your venue. That is the single most robust wet-weather structure available, because your delegates never leave the building. Operators listed as mobile and indoor-capable include Team Up Events Christchurch, Archery Combat Sports, Kahlo Mexican Cooking School, McKay & Co Florist, Honey & Moss, Pinot and Picasso Christchurch CBD, Artvine Queenstown and WanaHaka.

If you are already paying for a plenary room, converting it for two hours costs nothing extra and removes an entire transport leg.

Which categories travel best indoors

Creative is the most weather-proof category (59 of 60 operators run indoors or both). Competitive is close behind, with 69 indoor and 39 either-way. Culinary and cultural formats are also largely indoor. Adventure and water formats are where the weather exposure concentrates.

How to build the backup into the contract

Agree the switch point and the deadline with your outdoor operator in writing — typically a call made 24 hours out — and hold the indoor option on a provisional booking for the same window. Talk to your PCO or DMC about who owns that call. Start your search at /category/activities and pair it with a venue that has flexible breakout space.
