The inaugural Massey University Rural Innovation Youth Summit is a three-day residential programme (19–21 January 2027) for Year 12 and 13 students at Colombo Hall on Massey's Manawatū campus in Palmerston North, run by the College of Sciences / School of Agriculture and the Environment.
The future of New Zealand's primary sector gets a three-day workout in Palmerston North this January, as Massey University opens the doors of its Manawatū campus to the country's next generation of agricultural thinkers. The inaugural Rural Innovation Youth Summit runs from 19 to 21 January 2027, bringing Year 12 and 13 students from across Aotearoa together for hands-on workshops, scientific experiments, a look at emerging agri-technologies, and tours of working research farms and industry sites.
The summit is organised by Massey University's College of Sciences, with staff from the School of Agriculture and the Environment running the programme alongside local industry partners. It is the inaugural edition, introduced as a companion to the Food Innovation Youth Summit (first held in 2026 with 56 students), and arrives as Massey marks its 2027 centenary and its roots as an agricultural college. Head of School Professor Paul Kenyon has described the new summit as a natural progression from the food summit. Massey is also seeking additional industry partners and supporters for both 2027 events.
The summit is aimed at Year 12 and 13 secondary students with an interest in the wider food and fibre sector, spanning agriculture, pastoral animal management, environmental science and food production. It is explicitly not intended for students interested in Veterinary Science, who are directed to other pathways. Applications closed on 25 September 2026, with selection in October and successful applicants contacted early in Term 4; students submit a personal statement and an endorsement from a teacher or careers adviser.
Sessions are based at Colombo Hall on University Avenue, Turitea, at Massey's Manawatū campus on the southern edge of Palmerston North. As a residential programme, students stay in the Massey halls of residence with meals provided across the three days. Palmerston North is well connected for a city its size: Palmerston North Airport sits about 5 km north of the city centre with direct domestic links to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and the campus is a short drive south of the city. For students travelling longer distances, the organisers note travel support is available. The city's compact layout and established student accommodation make it a practical base for a multi-day residential programme.
The summit is a useful marker of Palmerston North's standing as an education- and primary-sector hub for business events. University-anchored residential programmes like this one draw delegates from across the country into campus conference and accommodation facilities during the summer break, keeping venues such as Colombo Hall and the Massey halls of residence active off-season. It also reflects a wider pattern of New Zealand tertiary institutions using structured multi-day summits to connect young talent with industry — the kind of recurring, nationally sourced gathering that underpins regional MICE demand in the Manawatū.
