NZIF brings its 2026 forestry conference to the Dunedin Centre

MICE editorial — 09 August 2026 Dunedin Tier A

The New Zealand Institute of Forestry's 2026 conference, 'Back to Business: Forward with Confidence', runs 26-28 August 2026 at the Dunedin Centre, gathering forestry leaders, researchers and practitioners to reframe the sector's narrative around innovation and partnership.

A forestry sector conference built to reset the narrative

The 2026 New Zealand Institute of Forestry (NZIF) Conference, titled "Back to Business: Forward with Confidence", runs from 26 to 28 August 2026 at the Dunedin Centre in central Dunedin. Per the organiser, the conference is a response to years of intense scrutiny of New Zealand forestry, and is framed around showcasing success stories, cutting-edge innovation and partnerships that deliver both environmental and economic gains.

The listed event first surfaced via the 10times agriculture and forestry aggregator, but resolves to a full, live official event site with a confirmed programme, speaker line-up and venue detail.

Who runs it

The conference is organised by the New Zealand Institute of Forestry, the professional body for the country's forestry professionals, established in 1927 and approaching its centennial in 2027 (organiser). Day-to-day event management is handled by the NZIF Event Manager. The NZIF event-manager listing independently confirms the same dates, venue and description and directs registrations to the official site.

Who it is for and the programme

The organiser positions the event for industry leaders, innovators, researchers and practitioners. The core conference runs about 1.5 days and, per the organiser, registration includes the awards dinner and field trips. CPD workshops run on 26 August from 11:30am to roughly 3:30pm, followed by the NZIF AGM at 4:00pm (members only) and post-AGM networking drinks from around 5:30pm.

The published speaker list is substantial and sector-anchored. It includes Hon Todd McClay (Minister of Forestry and Agriculture) and Hon Mark Patterson (Minister for Rural Communities), plus figures from Te Uru Rakau / New Zealand Forest Service, Matariki Forests, Scion, Forest Growers Research, Indufor, carbon and ETS advisory practices, sawmilling and wood-processing businesses, and regional councils. An exhibition area and a broad tier of sponsors are also confirmed.

Venue, delegate movement and accommodation

The Dunedin Centre sits in central Dunedin, with the Dunedin Town Hall as its largest space, seating up to 2,200 (organiser). For delegate movement, the organiser reports the venue is generally walkable from most Dunedin hotels, with paid parking in the surrounding area, and that Dunedin Airport is a 30km drive of approximately 35 minutes. Partner accommodation listed by the organiser includes Scenic Hotel Dunedin City, 97 Motel Moray and UpTown Backpackers, all central.

Why it matters in NZ MICE

This is a national professional-body conference with ministerial-level speakers, a multi-day format spanning CPD, an AGM, an awards dinner, an exhibition and field trips, drawing a sector audience from across the country to Dunedin. That mix of plenary, exhibition and social programming, plus secured accommodation blocks, marks it as a genuine multi-night business-events driver for the Otago region.
