OPSITARA 2026: the Otago–SIT–Ara research symposium returns to Invercargill

MICE editorial — 25 October 2026 Invercargill Tier B

OPSITARA is the established joint research symposium of Otago Polytechnic, SIT and Ara Institute of Canterbury, and the organiser's 2025 Book of Abstracts confirms SIT (Invercargill) as host for the 2026 edition, though 2026 dates, venue detail and programme are not yet published.

OPSITARA is the annual joint research symposium of three southern New Zealand tertiary institutions — Otago Polytechnic (OP), the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) and Ara Institute of Canterbury (ARA), from which the acronym is drawn. It has run across recent years (editions include 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025), rotating its host campus between the partner institutions. OPSITARA 2025 was held on 4–5 December 2025 in Dunedin, hosted by Otago Polytechnic; according to that event's Book of Abstracts, the symposium's "Rere Āio" kōhatu (a mauri taonga passed between hosts) "will pass next to Southern Institute of Technology for the 2026 conference," confirming SIT and Invercargill as the host for 2026. As of this research, SIT had not yet published the 2026 dates, a dedicated event page, or a programme.

Who runs it

OPSITARA is run collaboratively by Otago Polytechnic, SIT and Ara Institute of Canterbury, and has functioned as the research symposium for the southern region of the former Te Pūkenga network. For 2026 the host institution is SIT. When SIT last hosted (OPSITARA 2023), the event was chaired by Dr James Savage (SIT Research Coordinator) and Dr Sally Bodkin-Allen (SIT Research Manager), which indicates where organising responsibility sits locally.

Who it's for

The symposium is aimed at research-active academic staff and postgraduate students from the partner institutions and the wider vocational/applied-research community. Programme strands at the 2023 SIT edition spanned applied and technological research, rangahau Māori, creative practice and pedagogical research, with construction and infrastructure, business, health and wellbeing, and vocational teaching and learning strongly represented. In 2023 the event was opened to researchers from all regions, not only the south.

The venue and logistics

The 2026 host is SIT's Invercargill Campus. When SIT hosted OPSITARA 2023 (30 November – 1 December), sessions were held at Te Rau o te Huia | Centre for Creative Industries on the Invercargill campus, with around 115 attendees and a comparable number of presentations across in-person and pre-recorded formats; the specific 2026 building has not been confirmed. As context, SIT's Invercargill Campus is the institution's main base and sits close to the Invercargill city centre in Southland. Invercargill is served by Invercargill Airport with regular domestic connections, and the city is also reachable by road from Queenstown and Dunedin, the two nearest larger gateways. (Venue and transport noted here for reporting context only.)

Why it matters for New Zealand MICE

OPSITARA is a recurring, multi-institution academic conference with a track record of drawing researchers nationally, which makes it a dependable fixture in the southern South Island business-events calendar. Its 2026 return to Invercargill brings a research-sector audience into Southland and underlines SIT's role as a regional conference host — a useful signal of the city's capacity to carry a tertiary-sector symposium. For MICE planners, the main caveat is timing: the 2026 dates, venue specifics and delegate numbers were not yet published at the time of research, so firm details should be confirmed with SIT closer to the event.
