Palmerston Waihemo A&P Show 2027: East Otago's summer show returns

MICE editorial — 03 November 2026 Palmerston Tier B

The long-running Palmerston & Waihemo A&P Association holds its annual agricultural and pastoral show on the Palmerston showgrounds in East Otago on Saturday 30 January 2027, continuing one of the district's oldest community gatherings.

What it is

The Palmerston Waihemo A&P Show returns to the showgrounds in Palmerston, East Otago, on Saturday 30 January 2027, continuing one of the district's oldest community gatherings. The agricultural and pastoral show is listed through the Royal Agricultural Society of NZ aggregator (ras.org.nz), and the 30 January date is consistent with the association's established last-Saturday-of-January timing (the 2026 show ran Saturday 31 January, billed as the event's 160th year), though a standalone 2027 schedule was not yet published at the time of writing.

Who runs it

The show is organised by the Palmerston & Waihemo Agricultural & Pastoral Association Inc., a volunteer community body formed in 1865 whose first show was held in 1866. According to the RAS-hosted 2025 livestock schedule, the association coordinates sections including sheep and fleece, cattle and lifestyle, equestrian, trades and entertainment, vintage machinery, and garden and gallery, each run by named local volunteers.

Who it's for

It is a family-oriented rural community show aimed at both the farming sector and town residents, featuring livestock and equestrian competitions, vintage machinery, trade sites, home-industry and garden exhibits, and family entertainment. Otago Daily Times coverage describes it as a day for showing the best of the primary sector to the wider public.

Venue and access context

The show is held at the Palmerston showgrounds (Gilligan Street, Palmerston), on the recreation ground in the small East Otago town of Palmerston. This is the Palmerston between Dunedin and Oamaru on State Highway 1, roughly an hour north of Dunedin, and should not be confused with Palmerston North in the North Island. The association's own schedule names the site the Palmerston Showgrounds, so the directory's "Palmerston Domain" label refers to the same local showgrounds.

Why it matters

As a show running in continuous form since the 1860s, it is a cornerstone of the East Otago rural calendar and a long-standing point of contact between the Waihemo farming community and the wider public. Its endurance — including surviving earlier reported doubts over its future — reflects sustained local volunteer support for the district's primary-industry heritage.
