Party leaders take the stage at Te Pae: inside the South Island Election Conference 2026

MICE editorial — 22 July 2026 Christchurch Tier A

Business Canterbury brings South Island business leaders and the major political parties to Te Pae Christchurch on 14 August 2026 for a half-day pre-election conference, with addresses from Christopher Luxon and Chris Hipkins and a dedicated South Island infrastructure debate.

What the conference is

The South Island Election Conference 2026 is a half-day, business-focused pre-election event at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre on Friday 14 August 2026, running from 9:30am to 2:00pm. According to organiser Business Canterbury, it brings South Island business leaders together with representatives of the major political parties to debate the economy, workforce and infrastructure ahead of the 2026 General Election.

Business Canterbury frames it as a chance to step into the conversation shaping the region's economic future rather than hear about it afterwards — a focused half-day built around leaders' addresses and policy panels.

Who runs it

The conference is organised by Business Canterbury (formerly the Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce), working with Chambers of Commerce from across Te Wai Pounamu / the South Island. The partner list published for the event spans the regional chamber network — Business South and the Marlborough, Nelson Tasman, South Canterbury, Southland, Queenstown and Wānaka chambers — alongside major partners including Christchurch Airport, Scenic Hotel Group and law firm Wynn Williams. That coalition frames the event as a pan–South Island business gathering rather than a Canterbury-only one.

Who it's for and what's on

The audience is senior South Island business leadership; Business Canterbury reported just under 500 registrations in the lead-up, describing it as the largest pre-election gathering of business and political leadership in the South Island.

The published programme opens with tea and networking from 9:30am, followed at 10:00am by a welcome, an address from National Party leader Rt Hon Christopher Luxon, and an economy panel on productivity, innovation and tax settings featuring ACT, Labour, National and New Zealand First. After morning tea, Labour leader Rt Hon Chris Hipkins delivers his address at 11:30am, followed by a workforce panel on immigration, health and safety, industrial relations and education, and a dedicated South Island infrastructure debate between Labour and National. The programme closes with lunch and networking before a 2:00pm finish. The organiser notes all major parties will be represented.

The venue and getting there

Te Pae Christchurch sits at 188 Oxford Terrace on the banks of the Ōtākaro / Avon River in the central city, the convention centre that anchored Christchurch's post-earthquake rebuild when it opened in 2021. Christchurch Airport — a major event partner — is around 20 minutes from the centre by road, and the venue is surrounded by central-city hotels, including partner Scenic Hotel Group's Christchurch properties. For a half-day event drawing delegates from Nelson, Marlborough, the West Coast, Otago and Southland, that central location and airport proximity matter: much of the roughly 500-strong audience travels in and out within the day or overnight, concentrating movement around the single Friday.

Why it matters for NZ MICE

The conference is a clear example of an association-driven business event using a flagship convention centre to convene a whole region. Landing both major-party leaders and the full chamber network at Te Pae for a single half-day underlines the venue's pulling power for high-profile civic and business gatherings, and the event's scale — approaching 500 delegates for a half-day — reflects the appetite for election-year business programming across the South Island.
