Redox Biology Meeting 2026: SRRA and International Human Peroxidase Meeting land in Christchurch

MICE editorial — 14 August 2026 Christchurch Tier A

The Redox Biology Meeting runs 2-4 September 2026 in Christchurch as a Queenstown Research Week satellite, jointly hosting the 33rd Meeting of the Society for Redox Research Australasia and the 13th International Human Peroxidase Meeting across the University of Otago Christchurch campus and Te Pae Convention Centre.

Redox Biology Meeting 2026

The Redox Biology Meeting takes place from 2 to 4 September 2026 in Christchurch, bringing the international redox research community to the South Island as a satellite of Queenstown Research Week. According to the organiser, it is a joint meeting of the Society for Redox Research Australasia and the 13th International Human Peroxidase Meeting, staged over three days.

The programme opens on Day One (2 September) at the University of Otago Christchurch campus, then moves to Te Pae Convention Centre for Days Two and Three (3 and 4 September). The Society for Redox Biology and Medicine (SfRBM) independently lists the same dates and points to Te Pae as the principal venue.

Who runs it

The meeting is convened by Nina Dickerhof and Mark Hampton, both of the University of Otago, under the banner of the Society for Redox Research Australasia and the Queenstown Research Week umbrella. Queenstown Research Week is one of New Zealand's largest annual scientific gatherings, coordinating a cluster of specialist satellite meetings each year.

Who it is for and the programme

The organiser states that sessions span a diverse range of redox topics centred on the role of peroxidases and reactive oxygen species in physiological and disease processes, and on the development of biomarkers and novel therapeutics. Researchers with interests in ageing, metabolism, cancer, infectious disease, cardiovascular disease and neurological disease are specifically welcomed.

A strong international speaker line-up is confirmed, including Elias Arner (Karolinska Institute), Keriann Backus (UCLA), Michael Davies and Clare Hawkins (University of Copenhagen) and Barry Halliwell (National University of Singapore), together with New Zealand-based speakers Tony Kettle, Liz Ledgerwood and Margreet Vissers of the University of Otago. A draft programme and early-career researcher travel awards are published on the meeting page, with abstract submissions closing 1 July 2026 and registrations closing 20 August 2026.

Venue and getting there

The two venues sit close together in central Christchurch. The University of Otago Christchurch campus is on Riccarton Avenue beside Christchurch Hospital and Hagley Park, while Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre is on the Oxford Terrace riverfront in the central city, a short walk away. Christchurch Airport lies roughly 12 kilometres from the central city, typically around a 20-minute drive, with domestic and trans-Tasman connections plus onward links for international delegates. Central Christchurch offers a dense cluster of hotels within walking distance of both venues, and Queenstown Research Week maintains a dedicated accommodation page for attendees.

Why it matters for NZ business events

This meeting is a clear example of New Zealand's academic sector anchoring high-value international congress activity in the regions. It draws senior redox scientists from Europe, North America, Asia and Australasia into multi-night stays in Christchurch, combines a university campus day with a purpose-built convention centre, and demonstrates Te Pae's role in hosting specialist scientific programmes that spread delegate spend across the central city.
