The West Otago A&P Show is a long-running one-day agricultural and pastoral show run by the West Otago A&P Society, listed by the Royal Agricultural Society of NZ for 21 November 2026 at the West Otago A&P Showgrounds in Tapanui.
The West Otago A&P Show is a one-day agricultural and pastoral show held each November at Tapanui, in the West Otago district of Otago. The Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand lists the 2026 show for Saturday 21 November 2026, running 8:00am to 5:00pm at the West Otago A&P Showgrounds, 138 Tapanui Raes Junction Highway, Tapanui. It is the first show on the southern A&P calendar each season, opening a run of shows that moves through South Otago, Southland and Central Otago into the new year.
The show is organised by the West Otago A&P Society, a small volunteer-run association. According to the Otago Daily Times, the society was formed in 1910 by a group of local farmers and held its first show at Kelso in November 1911. The ODT reported the society had around 60 members, many of them descendants of the original founders.
It is a community and primary-industry event drawing farmers, stock exhibitors, rural families and the wider West Otago public. The ODT describes a strong horse section and a popular children's section for showing animals, baking and crafts, alongside livestock judging, trade stalls and sideshows.
The show began at Kelso, a town effectively abandoned after the floods of 1978 and 1980. The ODT reports that after a temporary stint at Gore, the society moved in 1981 to the Tapanui racecourse, which it shares with the local racing club; this is the site the Royal Agricultural Society lists as the West Otago A&P Showgrounds. Tapanui is a small rural town in West Otago, inland from Gore and Balclutha in the lower South Island.
As the opening event of the southern A&P show season, the West Otago show is a fixture of the regional rural calendar with more than a century of continuity. The ODT reported its 100th show drew more than 160 exhibitors, with attractions including a hound display, tractor dancing, a grand parade, speed-shearing and livestock championships, underlining its role as an annual gathering point for the West Otago farming community.
