Water and coastal team building activities in Auckland

MICE editorial — 21 October 2026 Auckland Tier A

Sailing, dragon boating, kayaking, surfing and rafting for corporate teams in Auckland, with the operators listed on MICE.

Water and coastal team building in Auckland

Auckland is built around two harbours and a string of west-coast surf beaches, so it is one of the best cities in New Zealand for getting a corporate group out on the water. Sailing, dragon boating, sea kayaking, surfing, jet boating and white-water rafting are all available within reach of the CBD, and several operators run sessions designed specifically for teams. MICE lists ten water and coastal activity operators in the Auckland region.

On the harbour

  • Sailing — the New Zealand Sailing Trust runs team sessions on classic yachts (groups of roughly 14-20), and the Explore Group offers harbour sailing from the waterfront, a short walk from the downtown hotels.
  • Dragon boating — the Auckland Dragon Boat Association puts a whole team in one boat, which makes it one of the most genuinely collaborative options on this list.
  • Sea kayaking — Auckland Sea Kayaks guides groups on the Waitematā, including trips across to Rangitoto.
  • Jet boating — Auckland Jet Boat Tours takes groups of up to about 23 for a fast harbour blast.

West coast and white water

  • Surfing — Aotearoa Surf School and Muriwai Surf School run two-hour beginner lessons on the west-coast beaches, taking groups from around six or seven people.
  • Rafting and canyoning — Wero Whitewater Park in Manukau runs a raft-build challenge and controlled white-water sessions on an artificial course, and AWOL Canyoning Adventures heads into the Waitākere Ranges.
  • Marine education — the Sir Peter Blake MERC at Long Bay runs half-day, full-day and overnight programmes that combine several on-water activities.

Planning notes

West-coast surf and canyoning need a transfer of roughly 40-50 minutes from the CBD, so they work best as a half-day offsite rather than a quick break between sessions; harbour sailing, dragon boating and kayaking are closer and easier to slot into an afternoon. Water activities are weather- and tide-dependent, so confirm a wet-weather or indoor alternative with the operator when you book. Check group minimums and maximums early — a large conference will usually rotate through in waves or split across two operators.

For the rest of the programme, MICE lists Auckland conference venues and event transport so you can line up the meeting space and the coaches to the coast in the same place.

*Listings on this page are drawn from MICE's directory and current at publication.*

Frequently asked

What water-based team building is available in Auckland?

Options include sailing, dragon boating, sea kayaking, surfing, jet boating, white-water rafting and canyoning. MICE lists ten water and coastal activity operators in the Auckland region.

Which water activities are closest to the city?

Harbour sailing, dragon boating, kayaking and jet boating all run from or near the Waitematā waterfront, a short distance from CBD hotels. Surfing and canyoning are on the west coast, around 40-50 minutes away.

Are Auckland water activities suitable for large groups?

Yes, but capacities vary by operator and most cap a single session, so large conferences usually rotate through in waves or split across operators. Dragon boating and the Sir Peter Blake MERC programmes are built for whole teams.

What happens in bad weather?

On-water activities are weather- and tide-dependent, so confirm a wet-weather or indoor alternative with the operator when booking. Wero Whitewater Park uses a controlled artificial course, which is less exposed than open water.
