Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall (Te Whare Kōrero o Haehaenui) is a heritage community hall and events venue at 33 Buckingham Street, in the main street of Arrowtown. It is owned and administered by Queenstown Lakes District Council, which records that the hall was originally built in 1870, during the period when Arrowtown was established as a Central Otago gold mining settlement. The hall sits among the boutique shops and eating places of Buckingham Street and remains in regular use by local theatre and musical groups as well as community classes.
The main auditorium has a floor area of 192m2 and includes a presentation and performance stage, a backstage area and a dressing room. A supper room with full kitchen and bar facilities adjoins it. QLDC's venue guide lists auditorium capacities of banquet 150, theatre 234 and cocktail 400 including the supper room; the supper room alone takes 50 theatre style or 100 cocktail style. The floor plan indicates round table seating for 160. A separate meeting room is also available. Hire times run from 8.00am to midnight, and the whole venue, main auditorium, supper room, meeting room or kitchen can be booked individually.
Whole-venue hire includes up to 250 in-house Sebel seats, up to 15 trestle tables, all electricity and heating, and a basic in-house sound system with a microphone. The commercial-grade kitchen has an under-bench fridge, a commercial oven with a six-burner gas hob and a commercial dishwasher, and the bar has its own under-bench fridge. QLDC public Wi-Fi is available; organisers with streaming or high-data needs are directed to speak with the venue manager. There is no in-house catering or full audio-visual service, but the council can recommend suppliers familiar with its venues, and hirers may bring their own caterers, food and beverages. A special licence is required to sell alcohol. The venue has flat entry, an accessible toilet and hearing loops. There is no designated parking for the hall itself; a large public car park is on Ramshaw Lane, one accessible park sits outside on Buckingham Street, and an Orbus stop with services to Frankton Bus Hub is about a minute away. Hire rates are tiered across community, standard and commercial categories.
The Athenaeum Hall works well for conferences and seminars of up to a couple of hundred delegates, awards evenings, product launches, performances and gala dinners, with the supper room doubling as a catering base, registration area or break-out space. Its heritage character and main-street Arrowtown setting give it appeal for incentive programmes and conference social functions, though organisers should plan to bring in their own AV and catering.
