Best Cafe is a seafood restaurant and fish and chip shop at 30 Lower Stuart Street in central Dunedin. It was established in 1932 by Patrick Collins and, according to RNZ, is now run by his great-granddaughter, Jessica Marks. RNZ notes it can potentially lay claim to being the oldest family-owned and operated fish and chippery in New Zealand.
The menu is built around fresh seafood and fish and chips. Items listed include shrimp cocktails, whitebait fritters, hand-cut Agria chips and ice cream sundaes, with white bread and curled butter served with meals. The fit-out is deliberately retro, with Formica tablecloths, vinegar in glass bottles, blackboard menus and coloured chairs.
The cafe is BYO, with corkage listed at $6 per wine bottle and $2 per beer bottle. A third-party listing gives hours of Tuesday to Saturday, 11:30am to 8:00pm; confirm current hours by phoning 03 477 8059.
The sources reviewed do not describe private dining or function packages.
Suitability: a casual, long-established option for small group meals; confirm group bookings directly. See other Dunedin venues.
