Black Estate is a family-run winery, tasting room and restaurant in the Waipara Valley, around 45 minutes' drive north of Christchurch, overlooking rolling North Canterbury hills. It is home to three certified biodynamic vineyards, farmed organically and biodynamically (certified through BioGro and Demeter) with a regenerative approach, producing expressive, site-driven wines.
The restaurant is known for a seasonal, produce-led approach, turning locally sourced organic and biodynamic ingredients – including fish caught by locals – into daily lunches. The setting is deliberately pared-back and minimalist, with black-painted walls, an unconventional look for a North Canterbury winery.
Black Estate has twice been named New Zealand's Best Winery Restaurant in the Cuisine Good Food Awards, and has drawn international attention, including from New York Times wine writer Eric Asimov, helping put Waipara on the global wine map.
With its acclaimed restaurant, biodynamic wines and striking setting, Black Estate suits high-quality group lunches, incentive visits and VIP wine experiences in Waipara. For organisers building premium incentive or leisure itineraries around North Canterbury, it offers award-winning food and wine within an hour of Christchurch. Confirm group booking sizes and options directly with the winery.
