About Brian Bellringer Pavilion

The Brian Bellringer Pavilion is the sports pavilion at the Pukekura Park sportsground in New Plymouth, hired out by New Plymouth District Council. It is a working cricket facility first and a hire venue second, and the council is explicit about that: the pavilion is not suitable for social functions, and it is often busy over summer with cricket commitments.

Spaces and facilities

The pavilion has seating and tables for 35, full kitchen facilities, and changing rooms for two teams plus a separate umpires' room. It is not wheelchair accessible. Bookings are handled through the council's venue hire service, with halls and pavilions charged at an hourly rate.

History

The walls of a single-storey concrete structure built in 1924 still form part of the building today. A second storey was added in 1956, and the pavilion was extended again in 1988 — at which point it was dedicated to Brian Bellringer in recognition of his services to the community and to Taranaki cricket. Bellringer wrote *A Tale Worth Telling* on Taranaki cricket and *The Stag's Progress* on Central Districts, and was awarded the ICC centenary medal for services to the game. Cricket has been played at Pukekura Park since the 1890s, with first-class matches from the 1950s and a men's World Cup fixture in 1992.

Suitability for meetings and events

This is a niche booking. With tables and seating for 35 and a full kitchen it will comfortably take a club AGM, a committee meeting, a coaching or officials' briefing, or a small training session — particularly for sporting organisations already using the ground. It is not set up for conferences, dinners or corporate functions, there is no listed AV, and the lack of wheelchair access rules it out for any event with mixed accessibility needs. Planners looking for a general-purpose meeting room should look at other New Plymouth venues.
