Commons Eatery is a restaurant, bar and cafe on the Octagon in central Dunedin, at number 29, next to the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. It opened in December 2024 in the space that was long home to Nova cafe, a local institution since the 1990s.
The venue is designed to work across the day — morning coffee and freshly baked treats from the counter (cheese scones, scrolls and seasonal cakes), a lunch menu of dishes such as slow-roast beef, a French dip sandwich with gruyère and jalapeños, or flatiron chicken, through to evening dining later in the week. The cosy indoor space blends mid-century charm with contemporary touches, and there is a stylish heated outdoor area for year-round use.
Commons trades daily, with later closing Thursday to Saturday. Its central Octagon location and all-day format make it a convenient choice for group meals, casual business catch-ups and post-event dining in central Dunedin.
