Cromwell Memorial Hall is Cromwell's principal community and events venue, owned and administered by the Central Otago District Council. It sits in the centre of the town, close to the shops and services of The Mall, and serves the wider Cromwell Basin and Central Otago district.
The original hall was a long-standing community facility catering for gatherings of up to around 330 people. It was closed and taken through a major redevelopment, delivered as the Cromwell Memorial Hall and Events Centre project, which the Council reported as an approximately $46 million investment. Following a public naming process, the completed building carries the name Te Puna Mahara.
The redeveloped centre is a multi-purpose arts, culture and events building rather than a single-room hall. Publicly released plans describe:
Capacities published for the conference offering indicate the main space can be set to roughly 500 standing, 400 theatre-style, 220 banquet, 120 classroom and 30 boardroom, depending on configuration. Intending organisers should confirm current figures and layouts directly with the Council, as fit-out and room naming can change.
The hall carries a war memorial dedication, a common form for New Zealand community halls built in the mid-twentieth century. The replacement project ran over several years and attracted considerable local debate about cost and scope before construction proceeded. The new centre was scheduled to open in July 2026, and Council announcements noted that conference business had been secured for the venue ahead of opening.
Bookings and enquiries are handled by the Central Otago District Council, including through its Cromwell Service Centre at 42 The Mall, Cromwell.
With a tiered auditorium, breakout rooms, on-site catering spaces and a central Cromwell location within easy reach of Queenstown, Wanaka and the Bannockburn and Gibbston wine districts, the centre is positioned for regional conferences, AGMs, awards dinners, community events and performances. It is a useful anchor venue for organisers building a Central Otago programme around Central Otago venues and nearby winery and incentive experiences.
