Gear Homestead is a restored heritage estate set among sweeping gardens in Aotea, Porirua, at 1 Okowai Road, on the hill overlooking Porirua Harbour just north of Wellington. The homestead was named Okowai ("muddy water") by its original owner, James Gear, and today operates as a dedicated events and functions venue with a bar.
The property sits on around four hectares of gardened grounds, giving a picturesque backdrop for ceremonies, photography and outdoor events. Elegant indoor spaces are paired with expansive lawns and garden views, creating a setting that is relaxed but refined.
Gear Homestead is suited to weddings, cocktail functions, corporate events and milestone celebrations. It caters to intimate gatherings through to larger events, accommodating up to around 80 guests seated indoors and up to about 150 with marquee extensions across the grounds. The venue offers exclusive hire, in-house catering and a dedicated events team, with tailored food and beverage packages to suit different event styles — an all-in-one arrangement that simplifies planning.
For Wellington-region meetings, conferences and incentive events, Gear Homestead offers a heritage alternative to a conventional function room, combining character architecture with generous outdoor space. See more Wellington venues.
