The hotel at 52 Main Road, Governors Bay, is one of New Zealand's longest-running licensed premises. Built in 1870 on the northern shore of Lyttelton Harbour, it looks out over the water toward the Port Hills and the harbour heads, about a 20 to 25 minute drive from central Christchurch over the Dyers Pass or through the Lyttelton tunnel.
### History
The building opened in 1870 as the Ocean View Hotel and carried that name until 1980, when it became the Smugglers Arms. It later traded as the Governors Bay Hotel. In 2020 the then owners changed the name again to Ōtoromiro Hotel, adopting the Māori name for Governors Bay in place of the colonial one, a decision that drew both support and some local criticism at the time. The property came through the September 2010 and February 2011 Canterbury earthquakes without structural damage and stayed open. After more than two decades under the same ownership, the business changed hands in 2026, though the land and building remained with the previous owner.
Because of the name history, the venue appears in listings and booking systems under both Governors Bay Hotel and Ōtoromiro Hotel, which is worth knowing when searching for it.
### The offer
The hotel operates as a full hospitality venue combining a bar, cafe and restaurant with accommodation. There are seven guest rooms, some with sea views and balcony access. The main draw is the outlook: the site sits above the bay with panoramic views across Lyttelton Harbour, and outdoor seating takes advantage of it.
### Function and event capability
The hotel has long been used for functions and events alongside its day-to-day trade, and its combination of dining, bar and on-site rooms makes it workable for small residential groups. The scale is that of a historic country hotel rather than a purpose-built conference property, so it suits small board retreats, incentive lunches or dinners, partner programmes and post-conference social bookings rather than large plenary sessions.
Given the recent change of operator, planners should confirm current function packages, room configurations and capacities directly with the venue. For groups working through Christchurch venues, it is a strong option where heritage character and harbour views matter more than meeting infrastructure.
