The Hundertwasser Art Centre, with the Wairau Māori Art Gallery, is a cultural venue in the Town Basin area of Whangārei, at 81 Dent Street. Built around the unrealised design ideas of Austrian-born artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who lived in Northland for over two decades, the centre opened to the public in February 2022 after a long-running, locally debated development process, bringing his distinctive architectural style — uneven floors, irregular windows and rooftop greenery — to life for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere.
The centre pairs exhibitions of Hundertwasser's work, including the show "Hundertwasser in New Zealand 1973–2000," with the Wairau Māori Art Gallery, which presents contemporary Māori art. Guided tours run Thursday to Sunday, 11am to 12pm, and the centre is open seven days a week, 10am to 4pm (closed Christmas Day and Good Friday). On-site facilities include a museum shop, the Aqua Restaurant, and venue hire for events.
As Northland's most distinctive purpose-built cultural landmark, the Hundertwasser Art Centre is well suited to receptions, exhibitions-linked functions and incentive-group visits looking to combine a meeting or event with genuine architectural and artistic interest in central Whangārei.
