The Isaac Theatre Royal is a historic performing-arts venue in central Christchurch on Gloucester Street. Operating since 1908, it is regarded as the only operational Edwardian-style theatre in New Zealand. Formerly known simply as the Theatre Royal, it underwent major redevelopment in 2005 and reopened on 17 November 2014 following a complete rebuild after the Canterbury earthquakes.
The theatre offers three hireable spaces. The Auditorium seats in the order of 1,255 to 1,292 across three levels, with a state-of-the-art rigging system, comprehensive backstage facilities, an orchestra pit and a full theatrical lighting rig. The Stagehouse, a 16 m x 18 m flat-floor space, suits concerts, dinners and dance events with a maximum capacity of around 650. The Gloucester Room provides a smaller, versatile space for meetings, receptions and functions.
The combination of a grand heritage auditorium and flexible flat-floor and function spaces makes the Isaac Theatre Royal suitable for conferences and plenary sessions, award ceremonies, gala dinners, product launches and cultural performances, as well as community celebrations. Its restored Edwardian interior offers a distinctive setting for high-profile events in the heart of the city. Explore other Christchurch venues.
