About Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall (Dargaville Town Hall)

The Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall, commonly known as the Dargaville Town Hall, stands at 37 Hokianga Road, Dargaville, and is owned by Kaipara District Council.

Important: current status

The hall is closed and is not currently available for hire. The complex was closed after Cyclone Gabrielle worsened long-standing weather-tightness problems and accelerated the building's deterioration. In December 2025 Kaipara District Council resolved to demolish both the annex building and the Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall. Resource and building consent for demolition has been issued, and the council reported in 2026 that the project team expected to take possession of the site at the end of August with demolition anticipated to begin in September. The council's Deputy Mayor has said a replacement town hall should be completed by 2028. A Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall Working Group was established in May 2026 following the loss of central government funding for the earlier Community Hub proposal.

Event organisers should treat this listing as historical and confirm current arrangements with Kaipara District Council before planning any booking.

What the venue offered

When operating, the hall was Dargaville's principal indoor event venue and could be hired in full or room by room. Its facilities included:

  • An auditorium seating up to 400
  • A conference room with a built-in AV system
  • A professional-grade kitchen

That combination — a large seated auditorium, a separate AV-equipped meeting room and commercial catering capability on the same site — made it suitable for conferences, community and council meetings, performances, awards evenings and functions serving the Kaipara district.

History

The hall was part of a wider community war memorial project that began in 1945, when members of the Northern Wairoa RSA started fundraising for new clubrooms. The project grew to include the redevelopment of Northern Wairoa Memorial Park on the town's outskirts and the construction of a new town hall. The RSA memorial clubrooms opened in 1957, and the Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall was formally opened on 10 March 1960 by the Governor-General, Viscount Cobham. The buildings stand close together on Hokianga Road.

A third conjoined building on the site — a heritage-listed 1923 former municipal chambers — is to be renovated rather than demolished.

Outlook

Until a replacement facility opens, organisers planning conferences, meetings or performances in Dargaville will need to look at other halls and venues in the Kaipara district. The council's community halls network and nearby Northland venues are the practical alternatives in the interim. See other Northland venues.
