Sawmill Brewery and the Smoko Room sit at 1004 Leigh Road, Matakana, around 45 minutes north of Auckland. Sawmill is an independent New Zealand brewery, and the Smoko Room is its adjoining taproom and eatery — a space built around conversation, community, food and drink.
The brewery was established in 2004 on the site of a timber mill that dated to the 1860s, and in 2016 it relocated from its original Leigh premises to the current site just outside Matakana. The Smoko Room pours 15 beers on tap alongside New Zealand wine, and its kitchen emphasises locally sourced, seasonal produce — cheeses, olive oil, kaimoana, beef, bread, olives, fruit and vegetables drawn largely from the surrounding Mahurangi region, with availability that changes with the season. It is open Thursday to Monday from midday until late.
For MICE and group organisers, Sawmill offers a characterful venue for relaxed functions, brewery visits and group dining as part of a Matakana Coast itinerary — a natural fit for incentive programmes and team days combining food, drink and the region's wineries. It complements the broader offering of Auckland region venues north of the city.
