The Sir Don Rowlands Centre sits on the shores of Lake Karāpiro within the Mighty River Domain, about 7 km from central Cambridge in the Waikato. Best known as New Zealand's premier rowing and water-sports venue, it also operates year-round as one of the region's most versatile conference and events centres, combining a lakeside setting with purpose-built indoor spaces.
The Centre offers a range of rooms of varying sizes, including the Main Hall, the Waipa Room, the Karāpiro Room, Te Manawa o Matariki Room and the adjoining Perry Community Water Sports Centre. Indoor capacity extends to around 1,000 people, while the wider domain grounds can accommodate large outdoor events. Many spaces feature floor-to-ceiling windows with 180-degree views across the lake, supported by audio and interactive technology and free on-site parking. The flexible room configuration suits conferences, gala dinners, exhibitions, team-building days and residential-style programmes that make use of the surrounding reserve.
The lake and its landscaped domain — a legacy of the 1896-2010 hydro development on the Waikato River and long the home of New Zealand rowing — give the venue a distinctive outdoor dimension that few conference centres can match, with walking trails, water access and event lawns immediately outside.
The Sir Don Rowlands Centre is well suited to conferences, incentive programmes, sporting events and corporate functions seeking a Waikato location away from the city but within easy reach of Cambridge and Hamilton. See more Hamilton & Waikato venues.
