SIT Centrestage Theatre is a purpose-built performance venue on the first floor of the CUE on Don building at 33 Don Street, in the heart of inner-city Invercargill. It seats 309 people, with the raked auditorium designed to give every seat an unobstructed view of the stage.
### History
The venue was originally opened in 1978 as the State Insurance Theatre. It has since changed hands twice and undergone structural changes, before being gifted by the Invercargill Theatre Trust to the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) in 2008, giving it its current name.
### Use and programming
As SIT's dedicated theatre, Centrestage hosts a varied programme drawn from the Institute's drama, music and film students, alongside a broader community role: it regularly hosts local school productions, ballet and dance performances, touring stage shows, and corporate lectures and presentations.
### Suitability for MICE
With fixed tiered seating for over 300 and a central Invercargill location, SIT Centrestage Theatre is well suited to conference plenaries, corporate presentations, lectures and awards-style events that call for a proper theatre setting rather than a flat-floor function room.
