Sumner Post Office is a bar and eatery at 40 Nayland Street in the seaside Christchurch suburb of Sumner, housed in the suburb's heritage former post office building. The original post office served Sumner and the surrounding bays between Heathcote and Taylors Mistake before closing in 1991, after which the building was used as a GP's rooms.
A local couple, Courtney Doig and Chris Lumsden, later bought and redeveloped the building, opening it as a bar and eatery and naming it in tribute to the site's history. The redevelopment retained and highlighted the building's heritage character while adding a contemporary fit-out, and the venue operates as a community-focused brew bar and eatery. Its restoration has been recognised by the New Zealand Institute of Architects through its local awards programme.
The heritage setting and neighbourhood-bar format suit informal gatherings, small celebrations and relaxed group get-togethers in the Sumner area. For organisers, it offers a characterful alternative to standard function rooms in a beachside pocket of Christchurch. See more Christchurch venues.
