About Tai Tapu Hotel

The Tai Tapu Hotel has been at the centre of social life in Tai Tapu, in the Selwyn district south of Christchurch, since 1856, when Edmund Shakespeare built what was then known as "Shakespeare's Accommodation". Originally called the Ellesmere Arms, it operated as a stagecoach inn on the road to Akaroa, complete with stables and forge, providing food and lodging to drovers moving stock from Banks Peninsula to the Addington market. The current owner became involved in 2008 and purchased the hotel outright in 2018, investing in the business and its grounds.

Trading today as the Tai Tapu Hotel – The Tap, the venue offers a restaurant and bar in a heritage setting, known for generous servings of steak and seafood.

Meetings and events

A standalone function room and grounds, built in 2016, host a range of private events including weddings, birthdays, winter balls and conferences. This dedicated event space, combined with the hotel's history and rural setting close to Christchurch, makes Tai Tapu Hotel a genuine option for functions, celebrations and small conferences in the Selwyn district. Confirm function-room capacities and event packages directly with the venue.
