The Plains Vintage Railway & Historical Museum is a heritage railway and museum complex at 20 Maronan Road, Tinwald, beside Tinwald Domain on the edge of Ashburton. It preserves a century-old railway line that once carried coal, lime, passengers and general freight.
The site combines train rides with extensive exhibits on rural history, railway artefacts, homewares and vintage farm machinery, and it features a working blacksmith. Several community groups are based on the site, including the Ashburton Fire Museum, the Steam & Model Engineers, the Woodworkers association and the Lynn Museum. Children's activities and classic games add to the visitor experience.
The Waterton Church and a function room are available for events and celebrations. Capacities are not published on the website, so organisers should confirm numbers, catering arrangements and availability directly with the museum. The site suits social functions, heritage-themed group outings and partner programmes, and has ample parking.
