Theatre Royal Nelson

The Theatre Royal Nelson is a restored heritage theatre at 78 Rutherford Street in central Nelson, close to the city's cafés, restaurants and hotels. It is a Category A listed building and operates as a multi-purpose performance venue, configurable for stage plays, music, dance, circus, cabaret, conferences-style presentations and community events. The theatre also runs a licensed bar.

History

The Theatre Royal was built in 1878 on former market gardening land by a company of Oddfellows. Nelson at the time was a town of about 6,000 people, and 1,000 crammed in on opening night. In 1904 the veranda was removed, the mud floors covered, wooden benches replaced with turn-up seats, raked seating installed in the gallery and a projection box added as the building moved into the era of the silver screen. By the 1930s it was run down.

Nelson Repertory was formed in 1934 and bought the Theatre Royal in 1944, saving it from conversion into a joinery shop. The building closed at the end of 2005 when the maintenance backlog made it impossible to hold a licence to operate as a theatre. After ten years of fundraising and two and a half years of rebuilding and restoration, the theatre officially reopened on 31 May 2010.

The restoration reinstated the 1878 auditorium: original hand-painted wallpaper was uncovered and new paper hand-made to match, the Victorian colour palette was returned, dress circle seats were restored and four period chandeliers installed. A three-storey concrete structure was built behind the heritage façade to house the stage, fly tower, orchestra pit, dressing, wardrobe and rehearsal rooms.

The Theatre Royal is owned and operated by the Nelson Historic Theatre Trust, incorporated as a charitable trust on 23 August 2001 and registered as a charitable entity on 3 July 2008.

Capacity and technical facilities

• Seated capacity: 333 across two levels, including three wheelchair spaces, all with unobstructed views
• Seats-out capacity: 450 (general admission downstairs, allocated circle) — the first six stalls rows (A–G) are removable to create a flat floor
• Stage: 8m x 8m, fully masked with legs and borders
• Rigging: counterweight fly tower plus front-of-house trusses
• Lighting: 120 dimmers and 140+ fixtures; ETC IonXe20 and Theatrelight Cue Master 120 control
• Sound: L'Acoustics A Series (LCR)
• Support spaces: four dressing rooms, rehearsal space, laundry, orchestra pit, scene dock

The theatre notes that there is no greenroom and no off-street parking. A computerised air conditioning system was installed as part of the refit, and the refurbished foyer includes a bar and toilet facilities. Full technical specifications are published by the venue.

Services for hirers

The Theatre Royal provides marketing support including space in its monthly e-newsletter, assistance arranging publicity and radio interviews, advertising rates with local print and radio media, in-person, telephone and online ticketing, and full front-of-house service. Sound, lighting and technical support is available at $50 per hour, with technicians who are industry professionals. The theatre is a member of Entertainment Technology New Zealand, the Entertainment Venues Association of New Zealand and the Safe Space Alliance.

Suitability for meetings and events

The Theatre Royal suits conference plenaries, product launches, award ceremonies, AGMs and performance-based programme elements where professional staging, lighting and sound are required. The flat-floor conversion adds flexibility for cabaret-style or standing formats. With no on-site catering or breakout rooms, it is best used alongside nearby Nelson venues for dining and workshop sessions.
