About this place

The University of Waikato's Hamilton campus, entered at Gate 1 on Knighton Road in Hillcrest, operates a dedicated venues and event service that hires campus facilities to external organisers. It is one of the larger conference options in the Waikato, with a scale and range of rooms that few standalone venues in the region can match.

### Spaces and capability

The campus has more than 100 lecture and seminar rooms alongside purpose-built event facilities, and can host events and functions ranging from around 10 people to 700 or more. All facilities are fitted with audio-visual equipment.

S Block brings eight tiered lecture theatres together in a single building, with two large foyers suited to trade displays and catering. For a multi-stream conference this allows plenary and concurrent sessions to run without moving delegates between buildings.

Waikato Management School offers several large lecture theatres with multiple breakout rooms, and a foyer with room for exhibitions, trade displays and catering.

Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts provides two main theatres, two multi-functional studios and a smaller mezzanine-level lounge, giving organisers professional performance spaces for keynotes, ceremonies, awards and cultural programmes.

The Pā is the University's campus hub, opened in 2023 as an $85 million development. Its ātea and wharenui function as a marae, hosting formal pōwhiri, while the central hub is used for graduations and events as well as student study and collaboration. The Pā won the Ted McCoy Award for Education at the 2024 New Zealand Architecture Awards and was highly commended in the higher education and research category at the 2024 World Architecture Festival. Te Kohinga Mārama Marae, the University's cultural home since the 1980s, also remains on campus and can be booked.

### Additional facilities

Delegate accommodation is available on campus outside university teaching periods, which suits multi-day conferences scheduled in the summer and mid-year breaks. Other facilities available to event organisers include gym facilities, tennis courts, sports fields, a chapel, on-campus parking and 24/7 security. The University also runs event facilities at its Tauranga campus.

### Suitability for MICE

The Hamilton campus is well matched to academic and association conferences, sector conferences with concurrent streams and trade exhibitions, AGMs, training programmes, graduation-style ceremonies and awards evenings. The combination of tiered theatres, adjacent foyer space for catering and exhibition, performing arts venues for formal sessions, a wharenui for pōwhiri and vacation accommodation on site means a full residential conference can be delivered within a single precinct — a genuine advantage for organisers running multi-day programmes with delegates travelling in from outside the region.
