Waiau Estate is a café, winery and function venue on Onaero Beach Road, between Waitara and Urenui on the north Taranaki coast. It combines beach, bush and established gardens on one site, and is used for weddings, private celebrations and other functions.
The main dining room is a large open-plan, high-ceilinged L-shaped room with bi-fold doors around its full length. Those doors open onto covered patio and entertaining areas, so the indoor and outdoor spaces work together and the venue can operate in any weather — useful in Taranaki, where conditions change quickly.
Outside, the gardens include a formal terrace flanked by olive trees with agapanthus around the edges. Fairy lights can be lit in the trees at dusk and an outdoor fire can be stoked, which gives evening events a different character to the daytime setting.
Waiau Estate is best known as a wedding venue and can host both ceremony and reception on site, with a choice of indoor and outdoor locations. It is also available for other functions. The combination of a single large flat-floor room, covered outdoor overflow and gardens makes it workable for staff celebrations, end-of-year functions, milestone events and group lunches as well as weddings.
Capacities, catering arrangements and hire rates are not published, so numbers and pricing need to be confirmed directly on 06 752 3609. The estate operates as a café and winery in its own right, so on-site food and beverage is part of the offer. There is no accommodation on site; groups needing to stay overnight will be looking at Urenui, Waitara or New Plymouth.
The rural coastal location is around a 30-minute drive from New Plymouth, so transport should be factored in for corporate groups. Its strength for the MICE market is the informal, out-of-town setting rather than conference infrastructure — there is no published information about meeting rooms, breakout spaces or audiovisual equipment.
