Whitby Taj is an Indian restaurant and takeaway at 69A Discovery Drive, Whitby, Porirua. Discovery Drive is Whitby's local shopping centre, serving a largely residential hillside suburb east of Porirua city, and the site is a short drive from Porirua's CBD and from the State Highway 1 and 58 interchange.
The restaurant trades under the Taj Restaurants banner, alongside a sister branch at Plimmerton on the coast. The two share a single website, menu, reservation form and online ordering system, with diners selecting the Whitby branch when booking a table or placing an order. The group describes its cooking as authentic Indian cuisine drawing on traditional cooking methods and fine Indian produce.
The menu is North Indian in character and extensive. It runs to tandoori entrees and mixed platters, a large vegetarian section covering paneer, dal and vegetable curries, chicken, lamb, beef and goat mains, a full seafood list, biryani and flavoured rice, a wide range of naan and stuffed breads, sides, a kids' section and desserts. Prices are listed online. The Whitby branch can be reached on 04 234 7444.
Table reservations are made through the group's online form, choosing Whitby Taj, a date and a lunch or dinner sitting. Published hours are lunch 11:30am to 2:30pm Wednesday to Sunday, and dinner from 4:30pm, closing 9:30pm Sunday to Thursday and 10:30pm Friday and Saturday. Takeaway and home delivery are both available, with delivery selected by suburb at the point of ordering.
The website does not advertise a private dining room, function room or dedicated event catering service, and no seating capacity is published for this branch, so any group arrangement should be checked with the restaurant. For MICE purposes, Whitby Taj is a suburban a la carte restaurant suited to small and mid-sized group dinners and to bulk takeaway orders for teams working in Porirua and northern Wellington.
