Uprising is an indoor bouldering, yoga and fitness facility based at 199 Ferry Road, Waltham, Christchurch. Housed in a converted former brewery, it is one of Australasia's largest bouldering gyms, combining a large bouldering area with a dedicated yoga studio, a fitness gym and an on-site café/bar under one roof.
Bouldering at Uprising is rope-free climbing on purpose-built walls, suited to complete beginners through to experienced climbers. No booking is required to use the main bouldering and fitness areas, and the gym's routesetting team refreshes sections of the boulder problems twice weekly to keep the climbing varied. A specialist children's area, Blocland, operates on a booking basis. The fitness gym is equipped with Technogym cardio machines, general strength and conditioning equipment, and climbing-specific training tools including a circuit board, campus board, an LED Moon Board and the Southern Hemisphere's first Lattice Board. The café serves a Fairtrade organic coffee blend from Caffe Prima alongside food sourced locally where possible, plus tap beer from Christchurch's Two Thumbs Brewery.
For event organisers, Uprising's bouldering and fitness spaces can be booked as a group activity for work teams, sports clubs or social groups, making it a practical option for corporate team-building sessions or informal incentive add-ons for Christchurch-based conferences and meetings. Its combination of climbing, yoga and fitness under one roof, plus a café for informal networking afterwards, suits groups looking for an active alternative to a standard function-room activity.
Uprising opened at its current Ferry Road site around 2019 and has continued to develop the facility, including periodic resets of its bouldering routes and its children's climbing area. It is run by a team with backgrounds in climbing and yoga instruction.
