About Pohatu Penguins

Pōhatu Penguins runs wildlife and adventure tours at Pōhatu / Flea Bay, a sheltered bay on the wild southeastern corner of Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū / Banks Peninsula, within reach of Akaroa and Christchurch. All tours start from the company's Wildside booking office on Rue Balguerie in Akaroa and travel over the hill by 4WD minivan, since the bay is reached by a gravel road suitable only for four-wheel drive. The bay is home to the largest little penguin colony on mainland New Zealand — korōrā, specifically Canterbury's white-flippered variant — and adjoins the Pōhatu Marine Reserve.

The business operates on a working family farm. Pōhatu / Flea Bay was the first officially established farm on Banks Peninsula in 1843, and the Helps family have farmed there since the early 1970s. Francis and Shireen Helps have spent more than three decades protecting the penguin colony from introduced predators through trapping, nest monitoring and rehabilitation, work that contributed to the Wildside Conservation Project and for which they have been recognised with the New Zealand Order of Merit. Around 40 per cent of the farm is now protected in covenants and reserves, and the family uses regenerative farming practices and runs rare sheep breeds. The Helps Pōhatu Conservation Trust — Korōrā Kaitiakitanga — continues the conservation programme, and tour revenue funds it.

What is on offer

The core products are the evening penguin tour, a wildlife sea-kayaking safari in the marine reserve, the Wildside Discovery 4WD scenic tour, hike-and-kayak combinations, and 24- and 48-hour farmstay packages that include a night in the middle of the colony. Guides are conservationists and family members rather than seasonal staff. Alongside penguins, the coastline supports Hector's dolphins, fur seals and seabird colonies. The operator holds Qualmark Gold, is a Department of Conservation approved and SMART operator, and is a signatory to the Tourism Sustainability Commitment.

Meetings, incentives and events

Pōhatu Penguins markets directly to corporate and incentive buyers and has a dedicated teambuilding programme. Private groups of up to 54 people can be carried at once using the company's fleet of 4WD minivans, which makes it viable for a full incentive group rather than only small parties. Programmes are tailored around fitness levels, group size, catering, accommodation and equipment.

Documented options include hands-on conservation work — monitoring nesting sites, building predator traps and penguin nest boxes — and tree planting in the Mable Hope Reserve, both of which give a group a measurable legacy outcome rather than a photo opportunity. Other options are a hike through ancient red beech forest, stable double sea-kayaks (which the operator positions specifically as a teambuilding activity), the overnight farmstay as a technology-free team reset, a wine and local produce tasting around Akaroa, and an Experience Akaroa package combining a harbour cruise with tasting.

On site there is a fully equipped communal kitchen and barbecue that groups can use for their own lunch, or a local caterer can be arranged. Bookings are handled online or directly with the Akaroa office.

For Christchurch-based conferences looking for a half-day or full-day off-site with genuine conservation substance, this is one of Canterbury's more distinctive options — though planners should note the 4WD access and outdoor terrain when assessing mobility needs within a delegate group.
