About Muriwai Surf School

Muriwai Surf School operates from a surf shed beside the beach at Muriwai, on Auckland's west coast, about 35 minutes' drive from the central city. It is New Zealand owned and operated, and the shed is a minute's walk from the sand.

Accreditation

The school is approved by the International Surfing Association (ISA), Surfing New Zealand and Water Safety New Zealand — relevant assurance for organisers who need to satisfy health and safety requirements before signing off an adventure activity.

Lessons

Group "introduction to surfing" lessons run daily at 10.30am and 3.00pm and last two hours, with surfboard and wetsuit hire included. Group lessons are limited to ten participants. The school holds over 150 boards and 250 wetsuits, with equipment matched to each surfer and the day's conditions.

Tuition covers basic technique, board control, surf safety and ocean awareness, with instructors in the water alongside participants. Private group lessons are also available.

MICE relevance

Muriwai's black-sand coastline, gannet colony and rugged setting make it a genuine "only in New Zealand" experience within an easy drive of Auckland's CBD hotels — which is exactly what incentive programmes are looking for. The ten-person group cap means larger delegations will need to be split across sessions or booked as multiple private groups, so numbers and timing are worth confirming early.

Suited to incentive travel, conference partner programmes, staff reward days and team activity. For other options, see Auckland activities.
