About Planetarium North

Planetarium North is an astronomy centre at 500 State Highway 14 in Maunu, on the Kiwi North / Whangārei Museum and Heritage Park site a short drive west of central Whangārei. It is New Zealand's northernmost planetarium and observatory, and is run by volunteers from the Northland Astronomical Society, who have been operating planetarium tours for more than ten years. It offers the only public astronomy tours in Northland.

The planetarium itself is a compact circular room with a domed ceiling, a star projector at its centre and 24 seats around the walls — the tour capacity, since there is no floor seating. Guides walk visitors through the southern night sky, covering navigation, constellations such as Crux and the Centaurus pointers, and seasonal Māori astronomy including Matariki and Puanga. Because the main programme runs indoors under a projected sky, tours proceed regardless of cloud or rain. The adjoining observatory, with its professional telescopes, is offered as a bonus at the end of the tour when conditions allow. The lobby carries Lego builds of the International Space Station, the Apollo 11 rocket and three generations of Mars rovers.

Groups and events

The wider facility — planetarium, club room and observatory — can host groups of up to 100 people, which makes Planetarium North workable as an evening add-on for a conference in Whangārei or an incentive itinerary travelling through Northland, provided larger parties are rotated through the 24-seat dome in sittings. Alongside public tours the Society runs school programmes, earth and space education sessions and one-off events tied to Matariki and other astronomical occasions, and it has partnered with Whangārei District Council on festival programming.

Practical points for organisers: bookings are essential and are handled online; public tours start at 7pm sharp with no late admission, because guests need to be dark-adapted; a minimum of six people is required for a public tour to run; and the recommended minimum age is eight. Parking is at Gate 1 for the Kiwi North carpark, with a short uphill walk past the Native Bird Recovery Centre to the planetarium. Torches and light-up footwear are asked to be kept off inside the facility to protect night-sky viewing. The venue is listed as offering wheelchair access and accessible parking.

For a group looking for a low-cost, weather-proof and genuinely Northland-specific evening experience, this is a straightforward option — best combined with the daytime Kiwi North heritage park on the same site.
