About The Papermill

The Papermill is a working handmade-paper studio at 38 Kamo Road, Kensington, in Whangārei. Established in 1989 and run as a charitable trust, it is a creative workplace where people with intellectual disabilities learn to make paper by hand from recycled paper and plant fibres, and go on to produce paper art and paper craft. The organisation deliberately emphasises ability rather than disability, and the papermakers themselves are central to the visitor experience — they show visitors what they are working on and explain the process.

There are two working spaces. In the Creative Studio, visitors can watch and take part in whatever is under way that day. In the Papermaking Studio, they can try pulling a sheet of paper themselves. A small shop on site sells handmade paper in a range of sizes alongside one-off greeting cards, notepads, earrings and craft packs. Paper art is a particular focus, with techniques and textures explored through an annual exhibition.

Relevance to groups and events

The Papermill suits small-group incentive and partner-programme itineraries in Whangārei rather than large delegate movements. Groups of eight or more are asked to ring ahead and book a time, which is the practical constraint for planners — the studios are a real workplace, not a purpose-built function venue, and there is no published capacity for large parties. For teambuilding, the studio runs workshops on demand, including one- and two-day papermaking workshops, which gives a hands-on option for a small delegate group or a spouse programme.

There is no charge to visit, though as a charitable trust the organisation appreciates donations, and any spend in the shop supports the programme. This social-enterprise dimension makes it a reasonable fit for groups looking for a community-benefit element in a conference itinerary.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm. The studios recommend visiting between 10am and midday or 12.30pm and 2.30pm, since a more thorough clean of the papermaking studio starts at 2pm on Fridays. The Papermill closes for around three weeks over the Christmas and New Year period, which is worth noting for January programmes.
