Tertiary ICT Conference 2026: NZ's tertiary-sector ICT community convenes in Wellington

MICE editorial — 08 August 2026 Wellington Tier A

The 42nd annual Tertiary ICT Conference (Hui Taumata Hangarau) runs 24–27 August 2026 at Victoria University of Wellington's Kelburn campus, hosting New Zealand's tertiary-education ICT community under the theme Imagine | Empower | Belong.

What it is

The Tertiary ICT Conference 2026 is the 42nd annual gathering of New Zealand's tertiary-education ICT community, branded Hui Taumata Hangarau. According to the official conference website, pre-conference activities run on Monday 24 August 2026, with the main conference days following Tuesday 25 to Thursday 27 August 2026. The event's theme is Imagine | Empower | Belong (Pohewatia | Whakamana | Noho Whānau), inviting the sector to explore future possibilities for learning, teaching, research and technology, build capability, and strengthen connection across the tertiary community.

Who runs it

The 2026 edition is hosted by Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington, whose Digital Solutions / Te Tai Matihiko team, led by Chief Information Officer Leanne Gibson, extends the welcome on the official site. The conference rotates its host institution annually across New Zealand universities: the University of Auckland hosted in 2025 and the University of Canterbury hosted the 40th edition in 2024, with the event long associated with the wider CAUDIT / Australasian tertiary ICT community.

Who it's for

The programme targets ICT leaders, managers and staff from across the New Zealand tertiary sector. Sub-themes span digital transformation and leadership, supporting strategies over servers, the shifting roles and careers of tertiary ICT staff, governance in an era of academic and student digital autonomy, and scaling services across organisations and the sector.

Venue and logistics

The conference is held at Victoria University of Wellington's Kelburn campus, in the heart of Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington — the capital and, as the organiser notes, home to government, national cultural institutions and a technology and innovation ecosystem. The official site carries dedicated Venue & Parking, Accommodation, Wellington and Transport & Transfers pages for delegate planning. Wellington is served by Wellington International Airport (WLG), roughly 15 minutes from the city and campus, with the compact CBD keeping accommodation and the university within short reach.

Why it matters to NZ MICE

As a multi-day sector conference with pre-conference activities, an excellence-awards component and a rotating national host model, the Tertiary ICT Conference brings a recurring, institution-backed business event into a New Zealand main-centre venue, reinforcing Wellington's standing as a host city for the education and technology conference market.
