Public health medicine specialists head to Christchurch Town Hall for NZCPHM Annual Scientific Meeting, 16-17 September

MICE editorial — 22 August 2026 Christchurch Tier A

The New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine has confirmed its 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting for Christchurch Town Hall on Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 September, with a workshop day following on Friday 18 September. The College's own pages give the conference theme as "Mai te tihi mārakerake o Aoraki: Whakaoranga" and show abstracts closed in July.

The New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine will hold its 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting at the Christchurch Town Hall on Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 September 2026, with an associated workshop day on Friday 18 September. The College's own ASM 2026 page lists the venue address as 86 Kilmore Street, Christchurch Central, and stated that registrations would open in June ahead of the meeting.

The conference theme, published by the College on its call-for-abstracts page, is "Mai te tihi mārakerake o Aoraki: Whakaoranga". The College describes the theme as reflecting "a call to make public health visible, courageous, and intellectually grounded in addressing inequity, restoring wellbeing, and shaping our collective futures" — a framing that anchors the meeting in its Canterbury setting through Aoraki, the maunga that dominates the Ngāi Tahu takiwā.

Who runs the meeting

The New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine (NZCPHM) was, in its own words, "established as an incorporated society in 2008 to represent the medical specialty of public health medicine in New Zealand". The College states it is responsible for the provision of specialist public health training for doctors who have completed their medical degree, and for the ongoing professional development of its Fellows.

The College defines public health medicine as the branch of medicine concerned with the assessment of population health and healthcare needs, the development of policy and strategy, health promotion, the control and prevention of disease, and the organisation of health services. Vocational training through the College leads to the Fellowship of the NZCPHM (FNZCPHM), and the College also runs the recertification and continuing professional development programme that keeps practising specialists in scope. That makes NZCPHM a standards and training body as much as a membership association — and the ASM is where its Fellows, registrars and invited academics present current work to each other.

The College's events pages describe the ASM as an annual fixture: "The NZCPHM holds an Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) or equivalent every year at which College members and academics are invited to present their latest research."

The programme and how it is built

The College's published call for abstracts sets out the shape of the scientific programme. Abstracts closed at 9:00am on Thursday 9 July 2026, with authors to be notified of acceptance by Friday 24 July 2026. Two presentation formats were offered: a standard 10-minute presentation followed by three minutes of questions, or a PechaKucha-style presentation as an alternative. Abstracts were required to run 200 to 300 words, structured under Background and aims, Methods, Results and Conclusions, and to close with up to three numbered "practice points" — explicit implications for what public health medical specialists should do differently as a result of the work. Submissions from registrars were, the College noted, "especially encouraged".

That abstract structure tells you a lot about the room. This is a working professional meeting built around free papers and applied practice, not a trade-show congress. The College's own historical record of Annual Scientific Meetings from 2008 to 2025 shows the recurring format: two days of themed scientific sessions and keynote addresses, a named oration delivered by a senior figure in the specialty, and a facilitated workshop day attached to the end of the meeting.

That record also shows how the ASM moves around the country. Recent editions were held at the Millennium Hotel in Rotorua (2025), the Waitangi Treaty Grounds (2024), Wharewaka in Wellington (2023) and the University of Otago in Dunedin (2022), with no ASM held in 2020 or 2021 because of COVID-19. Christchurch has hosted twice before in that period — the Commodore Hotel in 2013 and the Quality Hotel Elms in 2016 — but the College's historical table records no previous ASM at the Christchurch Town Hall. The College has not published an expected attendance figure for 2026.

Venue and delegate movement

The Christchurch Town Hall is operated by Venues Ōtautahi. The venue lists five event spaces — the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium, the James Hay Theatre, and three large function spaces in the Limes Room, Avon Room and Victoria Room — alongside a main foyer with three bars and an espresso bar. Venues Ōtautahi describes the site as centrally located and wheelchair accessible, with integrated technology including projectors, screens and sound systems.

The building itself is a Christchurch landmark. Opened in 1972 to a Warren and Mahoney design, it holds a 2,250-seat main auditorium and a 750-seat James Hay Theatre. It was closed following the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, reopened in stages from 2019 after a major restoration, and was registered as a Category 1 historic place by Heritage New Zealand in 2020.

For delegate movement, the Kilmore Street location puts the meeting on the banks of the Avon River next to Victoria Square, inside the walkable central-city block where most of Christchurch's conference-grade accommodation now sits. Christchurch Airport lies on the city's north-western edge with direct road access to the central city, and the venue sits within the same central precinct as Te Pae, the city's purpose-built convention centre — a concentration that means association meetings of this size rarely need to move delegates far between hotel, plenary and evening function.

Why it matters in the NZ business events picture

September and October 2026 are shaping up as a heavy medical congress period for Christchurch. The Medical Journal of Australia's Australasian conference calendar lists the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy annual conference in Christchurch from 1 to 4 September 2026, and the RANZCR Annual Scientific Meeting in Christchurch from 22 to 24 October 2026. The NZCPHM ASM sits between them.

Meetings like this are the quiet backbone of the New Zealand business events sector. They are domestic, they recur annually on a rotating-city cycle, they are anchored to a professional body with a compulsory continuing-education requirement, and they fall midweek in the shoulder season — exactly the pattern that produces predictable weekday bed-nights and reliable venue utilisation outside the summer peak. A three-day footprint with a workshop tail on the Friday also extends the stay pattern beyond a straight two-day conference.
