NZEA's 2026 conference was 'Eventing the Future' in Auckland, not Palmerston North - and it has already wrapped

MICE editorial — 06 September 2026 Auckland Tier B

The New Zealand Events Association's 2026 national conference was Eventing the Future 2026, held 4-5 August 2026 at Auckland's New Zealand International Convention Centre, drawing 250 delegates. The directory listing placing it in Palmerston North on 8 September 2026 does not match the real event, which has already concluded.

What it actually was

The New Zealand Events Association's flagship 2026 gathering was not a standalone "NZEA Conference" in Palmerston North. It was Eventing the Future 2026 (ETF26), the association's national conference for the events industry, staged over two days on Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 August 2026 at the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) in Auckland. Sessions ran from 10:30am on the Tuesday through to 4:30pm on the Wednesday. As of early September 2026 the conference has already taken place: the official site states plainly that "ETF26 has wrapped."

Who runs it

The conference is organised by the New Zealand Events Association (NZEA), the national membership body for the events sector, based in Warkworth, north of Auckland. NZEA defines the events sector as the individuals and organisations that professionally organise or support occasions that bring people together for a shared experience. The 2026 edition followed a previous conference in Hamilton, with the organiser describing ETF26 as "building on the energy and ideas sparked in Hamilton."

Who it was for and what happened

ETF26 was aimed at event professionals from across Aotearoa - organisers, suppliers, venues, promoters and industry stakeholders. According to NZEA, the programme featured keynote speakers, practical and future-focused workshops, and curated networking. The conference also hosted the NZEA New Zealand Event Awards and the Event Exchange, a supplier-and-stakeholder networking session. The official conference site reports the 2026 edition was the biggest yet, with 250 delegates and 480 guests at the Gala Dinner.

Venue and delegate context

The NZICC opened in Auckland in 2026 and is, per its operator, the only venue in New Zealand with official International Convention Centre status. It sits in central Auckland with convention capacity for roughly 3,150 and a 2,852-seat theatre, and reports more than 8,000 hotel rooms plus dining and entertainment within about a 10-minute walk. Auckland Airport is roughly 25 km (about a 45-minute drive) away, making the venue well suited to a national delegate movement drawing attendees from across the country (reporting drawn from nzicc.co.nz).

Why it matters in NZ MICE

Eventing the Future is the New Zealand events industry's principal annual meeting point, combining professional development, the sector's national awards and cross-industry networking. Its 2026 move into the newly opened NZICC - and the record turnout - signals the maturing scale of the domestic business-events calendar. The 2027 dates and venue had not been announced at the time of reporting.
