Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects holds its biennial in:situ conference at the Aotea Centre from 8 to 10 September 2026, co-located for the first time with the Commonwealth Association of Architects' 60th anniversary General Assembly. The organiser bills it as the largest architecture event ever held in Aotearoa, drawing delegates from across the Commonwealth and the Pacific.
Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects will hold its national conference at the Aotea Centre in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland from 8 to 10 September 2026. The official conference site publishes the event under a single combined name — in:situ 2026 + CAA General Assembly — and confirms the venue, the city and the three-day window on both its homepage and its programme page. Meeting Newz carries the same event in its Coming Events 2026 calendar, listed as "08-10 : New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) National Conference – Aotea Centre, Auckland", with the link pointing to insitu-caa2026.com.
The reason the event has surfaced under several different names is straightforward: it is one conference wearing two badges. In 2026 the NZIA's biennial in:situ conference is co-located with the Commonwealth Association of Architects' General Assembly, and different listings have picked up different halves of the combined title.
The conference's About page states plainly that "this year's in:situ Conference is co-located with the Commonwealth Association of Architects' General Assembly", that 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of the General Assembly, and that the NZIA is hosting it in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland for the first time. The organiser's own framing is that "in 2026, in:situ and the Commonwealth Association of Architects General Assembly come together for the first time, uniting two gatherings as one."
One date discrepancy is worth recording. The joint NZIA/CAA announcement published on 30 October 2025 gave the window as 7–10 September 2026. The conference website, which is the later and more authoritative source, now publishes 8–10 September 2026 on its homepage and programme page — the same dates Meeting Newz carries. The NZIA's own What's On listing shows a single date of 08 September 2026 with a 09:00am–03:00pm time slot, which appears to be how its calendar renders a multi-day event.
According to the joint announcement carried on the Commonwealth Association of Architects' site, in:situ is the biennial conference of Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA, established in 2015. The NZIA itself was first established in 1905 and is a membership organisation with more than 4,000 members, approximately half of them registered architects working in New Zealand, with the balance made up of New Zealand architects working overseas, graduates, students, teachers of architecture and retired architects.
The Commonwealth Association of Architects was established in 1965 to maximise the contribution of architects to the wellbeing of society and to facilitate cooperation among architects. It represents architectural institutes from countries across the Commonwealth and is a registered UK charity. In the same announcement, Huia Reriti, Perehitini (President) of Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA, described the institute as "deeply honoured" to welcome the CAA to Aotearoa for its 60th anniversary General Assembly, while CAA President Steven Oundo framed the anniversary as a moment to reflect on shared history and the challenges ahead for Commonwealth architects.
The organiser's programme page sets out keynote presentations, panel discussions, workshops and formal proceedings across three days, balancing global perspectives with local context. The stated speaking prompt is Manaakitanga — an exploration of how architecture provides support, generosity and hospitality — with additional streams going deeper on housing, economics and the Oceania region. The conference brand identity was developed with artist, designer and creative director Arnya Karaitiana around the idea of two gatherings within one Moana.
The announced speaker list is substantially international. It includes Brendan MacFarlane of Paris practice Jakob+MacFarlane; Dr Yasmeen Lari, Pakistan's first female architect and winner of the 2022 RIBA Royal Gold Medal and the 2024 CAA Lifetime Achievement Award; Peggy Deamer, Professor Emerita at Yale's School of Architecture; Philip Thalis, the 2024 Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medallist; Farrokh Derakhshani, Director of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture; Bengaluru-based Chitra Vishwanath; Nicolas Moreau of Moreau Kusunoki; and Abbie Galvin, the NSW Government Architect. Aotearoa and Pacific voices include Dr Albert Refiti of AUT, Professor Deidre Brown and Dr Karamia Müller of MĀPIHI, Dr James Miller, Dr Charmaine 'Ilaiū Talei, designer Carin Wilson, architect and artist Raukura Turei, and economist Shamubeel Eaqub.
The organiser also lists two ceremonial anchors: the CAA Awards gala dinner, recognising projects from across the Commonwealth, and the presentation of the 2026 NZIA Gold Medal. Up to 100 CPD points are available toward New Zealand architect registration.
The conference site describes the Aotea Centre as Auckland's performing arts and conference venue in the heart of the city, offering flexible plenary spaces, breakout rooms and exhibition areas within walking distance of hotels, dining, cultural institutions and public transport. The same page notes the building was designed by city architect Ewen Wainscott in 1974, has won awards including the NZIA Silver Medal, and holds on Level 2 the Taula anchor stone, donated by the people of the Pacific Islands in 1998.
The accommodation cluster the organiser has assembled is tightly drawn around the venue and the waterfront: Grand Millennium Auckland at 71 Mayoral Drive and Four Points by Sheraton at 110 Mayoral Drive sit on the same street as the Aotea Centre, with SkyCity Auckland and SkyCity Grand on Federal Street, and SO/Auckland, TRIBE Auckland, The Hotel Britomart and Jo & Joe in the Britomart and lower-city area. Park Hyatt is on Halsey Street in the Wynyard precinct. The Auckland Convention Bureau is also running an Auckland Delegate Offer Programme covering more than 70 activities and tours.
One piece of city timing is relevant to delegate movement. Auckland Council confirmed that the City Rail Link opens on Sunday 13 September 2026 — three days after the conference closes. The new Te Waihorotiu Station, which serves the midtown arts quarter including the Aotea Centre, will therefore not be in service during the conference itself; delegates in September will still be arriving by bus, by ferry via Waitematā, or on foot from the CBD accommodation cluster.
This is a rotating international association assembly landing on a domestic biennial conference, which is the pattern New Zealand's business events sector most values: it converts a regular home-market gathering into an inbound one. The organiser's claim that this will be the largest architecture event in Aotearoa is its own, and no delegate number has been published, but the structure — a Commonwealth-wide General Assembly, an international awards programme, and a speaker roster drawn from France, Pakistan, India, Japan, the United States, Australia and across the Pacific — points to a materially larger international share than a standard NZIA conference year.
It also lands in a busy Auckland week. Meeting Newz's September 2026 calendar shows the Climate Change & Business Conference at the Viaduct Events Centre on 7–8 September, the 2026 New Zealand CFO Summit on 8 September, the Cyber Security Risk Conference at the Grand Millennium on 9 September and the Auckland Home Show opening at the Auckland Showgrounds on 10 September — a concentration of city-centre demand across the same three days.
