The Botanical Expo runs Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2026 at the Lincoln Event Centre, 15 Meijer Drive, Lincoln. Led by the New Zealand Alpine Garden Society with five partner societies, it fills a Selwyn district venue built to hold up to 1,000 people.
The Botanical Expo 2026 will be held over two days at the Lincoln Event Centre, 15 Meijer Drive, Lincoln — Saturday 26 September from 1pm to 5pm and Sunday 27 September from 10am to 4pm, according to the event's own Where & What page. The MICE listing records only the Saturday; the official site confirms a two-day run.
The format is a combined show and trade floor: several competitive society shows staged alongside a plant fair of specialist growers, with a free demonstration programme running through both days.
The expo is convened by the New Zealand Alpine Garden Society, which hosts it as its Spring Show and whose contact details appear in the event site's footer. The organiser page on nzags.com describes the society as a club focused on horticultural excellence and on alpine, woodland and bulbous plants.
It is a genuinely federated event rather than a single-club show. The botanicalexpo.nz "About the Expo" section names the co-staging bodies: the Canterbury Horticultural Society, which the event site describes as New Zealand's largest gardening and horticultural organisation and which recently marked its 160th anniversary; the Christchurch Bonsai Society, sharing the art of bonsai since 1968 and described on the site as one of the longest-active bonsai clubs in New Zealand; the Canterbury Orchid Society, established in 1951 and described as the second-oldest orchid society in the country; Canterbury Floral Design, representing the Avon Floral Art, Floral Art North Canterbury and Cheviot Floral groups; and the National Daffodil Society.
The expo has a track record. NZAGS maintains dedicated Spring Show photo galleries for the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 editions, and its Botanical Expo page carries a captioned image from 2020 — placing the 2026 event within an established recurring series. Selwyn District Council appears among the sponsor logos on the event site, alongside Christchurch property developer Hughes Developments, listed on the sellers page as an expo sponsor.
The event site pitches it as an event for gardeners and plant lovers, with specialists drawn by rare alpines, bulbs and perennials — a two-tier audience of general public and serious collectors.
The exhibitor roster published on the sellers and exhibitors page is substantial and skews specialist rather than mass-market retail. It runs to roughly 30 listed sellers, exhibitors and sponsors, including hobby and boutique nurseries (Alouette Nursery, Alison's Alpines in Diamond Harbour, Behind the Hedge Garden Co., Janine Young's Alpine & Woodland Garden Plants, Joy and Nancy's Treasures, Ortel, Native Flora), larger commercial operators (Southern Woods, described on the site as one of the South Island's largest nurseries; Rhodo Direct; Nelson Plant Guy), niche specialists (Shop of Little Horrors carnivorous plants, Kusa Bonsai and Bright Side Garden, West Melton Plant Nursery, Wood and Wire Design, Plant Blankets), antiquarian and botanical booksellers (Paper Gardens NZ, Marge Hurst's collection), and garden destinations (Terrace Station at Hororata, Ribblesdale Gardens, Casa Rossa, Island Stream Peonies of Maheno, described on the site as home to the largest tree peony collection in the Southern Hemisphere).
Programmed content listed by the organisers includes the NZAGS Spring Show, the Canterbury Horticultural Society Daffodil Show, the Canterbury Orchid Society show, the Christchurch Bonsai Society display, the Canterbury Floral Art annual Bell competition and school exhibits, plus free demonstrations on bonsai, floral art, orchid care, kusa bonsai, tree pruning and building hypertufa troughs. A linked Broadfield Garden visit at 250 Selwyn Road, Rolleston runs as a satellite offer, and the organisers also promote an open gardens programme across Selwyn.
The Lincoln Event Centre is a Selwyn District Council facility at 15 Meijer Drive, Lincoln 7608, in the Selwyn district of Canterbury. Council material describes it as a state-of-the-art venue designed for everything from conferences to rock concerts, major sporting fixtures to community meetings, exhibitions to weddings, with capacity for up to 1,000 delegates.
Spaces are flexible and divisible. Council listings identify the Liffey Stadium as the main hall, the Nicholas Hall as a versatile space with a built-in stage that can be used independently or opened up to extend the stadium, and the Bayliss, Tod and Habgood lounges as break-out rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and doors. Per the council's facilities page the venue has free Wi-Fi throughout, four commercial kitchens, disabled access, standard AV in every room, portable and inbuilt staging, and furniture, glassware and cutlery on site. Organisers may bring their own catering and AV suppliers.
On access, the council states the venue is less than 20 minutes from both Christchurch International Airport and Christchurch city, and that free on-site parking is available for 200 vehicles. The Botanical Expo site records the venue as accessible by bus with plenty of parking. On accommodation, the council's conference page states that accommodation for guests, speakers and VIPs is within walking distance of the venue, with further hotel stock at Christchurch Airport and in the city less than a 20-minute drive away.
The expo is a useful demonstration of what a well-run regional council venue can absorb. Six independent membership societies, around 30 trading exhibitors, multiple competitive shows and a continuous demonstration programme are staged concurrently inside a single Selwyn district facility — the kind of multi-stream load that would otherwise default to a Christchurch city venue.
It also shows the divisible-hall model working as intended. The Nicholas Hall's ability to operate independently or open into the Liffey Stadium is exactly the configuration a show of this shape needs: competitive display space, trade floor and demonstration areas held apart but under one roof.
For organisers assessing Canterbury, the sub-20-minute airport and city drive times cited by the council, combined with 200 free on-site car parks, make Lincoln a workable exhibition and small-to-medium conference option rather than a purely local community venue — a point the council makes directly in marketing the centre for conferences with break-out rooms, welcome functions and gala dinners on site.
